I have never really bothered checking out Any Seat rewards, as the points required are bordering on farcical.

However, in planning a holiday in South Africa next year, I browsed Any Seat, and picked up 2 First Class seats from Sydney to Johannesburg for 142,000 each. Coupled with the J Classic Reward seats I picked up for the return flight, this made for a rather efficient booking.

142,000 first class from SYD-JNB; not bad.

Its probably worth keeping an eye on Any Seats Rewards more than I do.

I had simliar experience earlier this year when I could get MEL-HKG in F with Any Seat for less than classic awards.

I have since always checked both classic & any seats with all award bookings.

I have used any seat award as I wanted a particular flight.

MKY-ROK-BNE was not available for purchase and was not an option on classic award but was available for 13,130 points which included the taxes. Not a great use of points but if it gets you the flights you want for a little extra then it is worth a quick look.

I've also noticed that at times the anyseat rewards are not outrageously priced.

was looking at going to manila and the classic rewards were generally 15-17 hr sagas, but a direct anyseat reward was only 6000 points extra.

Now if only QF could give a burn rate like DJs for the taxes I'd be a happy camper :p

IIRC people have pointed out that Classic awards show up under the Any Seat engine, if Classic awards are available. 142k sounds like a Classic award (126k) + points for taxes/charges.

Quite possibly, although in this instance it wasn't showing under Classic Awards. I had basically been struggling to find anything under Classic Awards - and only looked at Any Seats out of desperation.

What was mildly frustrating was that I had been on the phone with Qantas trying to find availability, and they didn't mention the availability I found and booked under Any Seats. Do the QF people on the phone look at both Classic Awards and Any Seats - or do they just assume everyone is interested only in Classic Awards?

I've been checking some itineraries lately comparing the two, and while the inventory may be appearing under Anyseat (e.g. if Classic is available, anyseat is cheaper than if Classic is not available), there has been a distinct though not massive premium for the same anyseat award vs Classic (i.e. a few thousand points).

I must be cynical. I read the topic as though there were an invisible question mark and the end, and also in a very upward inflection.

I'm sure they're are 'specials' but surely QF would have programmed the 'Decider' with some basic parameters, eg Don't undercut the Classic table!

At first the did undercut, you will see some threads here but i believe your probably correct i don't think they do this any longer.

Doesn't AnySeat also includes taxes and charges?
