Hi all,
I know that Qantas AnySeat Awards are viewed as unpopular (even useless) but I was hoping someone might answer a few questions on the functionality of the software.

1. When trying to book some flights (BOM-SYD return) in my example, the BOM-SYD sector on the return flight cost less points than if i just booked the BOM-SYD as a one-way redemption. I am assuming this is how it is meant to work because one-way fares are often more than 50% of return fares. IS THIS CORRECT?
I was just curious about this because as we know domestic redemptions and many Qantas Int'l redemptions do not behave this way - ie. you can just book the single sector (one-way) fare/points with no penalty for not having a return sector.

2. If booking the return AnySeat Award (using the Flexible with dates option), the software moves to a screen which shows you the corresponding points for each available date within a 1 month window; for both the Outbound and Inbound sectors.
If I select my desired Dates/Points for both the Outbound and Inbound sectors, the software moves to the next screen whereby it ignores the Inbound selection and provides a list of completely new (more expensive) points options. Upon speaking the the Qantas FF staff, they gave me 2 reasons for this:
A) The first reason is because the return fare is a product of whatever you select on the Outbound fare and so it just ignores your Inbound (return) points selection. I replied that this seems to make the usefulness of the point/date selection screen compromised (useless) and she in turned replied "It's working correctly and that's how it works....."

B) The second reason (speaking to a different Qantas operator) was that the software was buggy and to redeem these sectors it would require you to book it through an Operator. She even said that even if you booked it on-line and made payment, they would have to call you back and inform you that the booking was not successful - and you would need to rebook through them.

I suspect that "A" could be truthful and "B" is just an inexperienced operator - or maybe they are both truthful in their own way. Can anyone confirm/explain how it is supposed to work?

FWIW, Classic awards price at 42000 points each way.
Anyseat Awards were priced at 47000-67000 each way.

Anyseat redemptions include taxes and charges right? Since taxes and charges tend to be higher for one-way journeys, that might explain the discrepancy. Classic awards are ++ for taxes and charges, so the points required for a one-way award would be 50% of the return award, but you need to pay the extras on top of that.

WRT to the points quoted - the AnySeat booking engine appears to incorporate both Classic award seats and AnySeat options. The cheapest AnySeat option (for 47000 points) is probably a classic award seat, but includes the taxes and charges in the points calculation.

Thanks for the reply AC.

I still think that there is more to this than Tax Inclusions.
Hopefully others will give some more input - ultimately maybe it doesn't matter. It is not like the AnySeat awards are enticing.

It could be that I am just thick though............

At approximately $0.01/point (the going rate under Anyseat), the 5000 point difference between Classic (42000) and Anyseat lowest available (47000) would be $50, which is probably taxes and fuel surcharges.

If you could do a dummy booking under Classic and advise us of the approximate extra charges that you'd need to pay yourself, then that would clarify the situation

Not sure what you're saying here. Anyseat starts from the same cost as Classic and gives you additional options (pay more points for otherwise unavailable seats).

Now, if QANTAS decides to cut back on Classic award seats, then we're in trouble. But until then, you're in no worse situation than before.
