Is Qantas baggage handling service deteriorating or am I having a run of bad luck?

Just before Christmas the base of my luggage was damaged on a QF flight SYD-BNE. This was less than 1 year old. Took it to the luggage centre in Brisbane who said it will be ready after New Year as they were waiting for a part. Finally went 3 weeks ago to pick it up and it was still not repaired as they kept receiving the wrong part. Anyway gave me a Samsonite American Tourister as a replacement.

Last night coming back BNE-SYD after picking up the bag off the carousel find that the handle is jammed. It was only it's third trip (BNE-SYD, SYD-BNE and BNE-SYD) and less than a month old. I had to lodge another report at baggage services. It must have somehow managed to be at the bottom of the pile and got squashed. I mentioned to the staff member that I want a new bag not a repair.

Am I being unreasonable in wanting a replacement and not accepting the current one to be repaired? Off to send some more useless feedabck to Qantas....

Had a call from Qantas customer care and it seems to me that Qantas customer care does not care about baggage services issues.

Interesting that only a couple of weeks after this incident I have delayed/lost luggage again. Obviously my luggage failed to make the same flight as me for an extremely simple BNE-SYD itinerary.

Still do not have luggage and I landed over 2 hours ago. Interesting when I have been a little late for check-in and ask for my luggage to be put on a later flight I am told regulations state the luggage has to be on the same flight as me and force me to pay a change fee to get on a later flight. Obviously Qantas are allowed to bend the rules when it suits them. :p

If anyone thinks weekly commutes are fun then think again. Or it could just be my luck....

I can't say I've ever had the displeasure of not having my bags meet me at the other end when flying QF. I just get annoyed that the consistency of baggage handlers and ramp staff at different ports varies widely.

I generally find SYD a doddle, with the belt generally running by the time I get downstairs (depending how far arrival pier is), MEL is generally the worst regardless of where you are (upwards of 15min+ before the belts begin to fire).

I have found that PER T2 is improving immensely particularly with Priority & J marked luggage. PERT1 however remains an absolute joke for ground services being so slow I always add on an extra 30min for safety.

Actually, the rules are that the passenger cannot control the baggage being on a different flight to the passenger.

If the passenger misses the flight, then bags are off-loaded. If the passenger wants the flight changed, bags are off-loaded.

IF, however, a late inbound causes the passenger to miss the connection, then the bags can be on a different flight, as the passenger has no way of controlling the flight that the bags will be on.

In short, if the passenger initiates the change of flight, the bags have to travel with the passenger. If the change of flight was outside the control of the passenger, then they don't.

I fly WGA-SYD-BNE for work, returning later the same week (usually) - on average every second week.

My bag hasn't arrived with me perhaps 4 or 5 times in the last 2 years. Usually on the way away from home rather than back, unfortunately.

I normally land in Brisbane around 10am local time, and my bag usually gets to me in Brisbane city early evening (between 5pm and 8pm mostly, though once it didn't arrive until about 11pm).

I also change out my bag once a year or so - they don't last long. I don't buy expensive bags though, mid size antler soft upright bags, etc.
