As the font of knowledge on all things Qantas, I seek your answers to the following.

As I sit in the QP in Sydney and stare out of the windows I am looking at the hangars across the tarmac. Across the front of these buildings are the numbers 131, 191, 245 and 271. Does anyone know what these numbers are for?

I believe they are street numbers. IIRC, that paved area from gates 1-8 used to be a street until Qantas built those gates along with the circular knob at the end in the late 90's ...

Yes, they are street numbers. I once saw an old airport map that actually named the street.

Wasn't happy with the street number idea so I asked them wot own 'em!

Thank you for your correspondence.
The numbering system is based on the Department of Civil Aviation's Australia wide building numbering system.
eg. Hanger 271 was the 271st building they erected. Each new building incrementally adds one where ever it is in the country.

I have also sat in SYD QP T3 and wondered what the numbers meant. The last time I was there was in early July and my wife Beverly asked me what the numbers meant. Fortunately I didn't say that they were put there in the time of the Emperor Nasi Goreng to keep the rabbits out of China. I just gave an erudite "i dunno" answer. but thanks for enlightening us:!:

Another great piece of aviation trivia to store in the growing domains of grey matter. Thanks for following it up. Quite interesting.

I am glad that someone cares enough to know what the numbers mean or even bother to sit/stand/notice the numbers in the first place. I will go to sleep happy knowing that I now know the answer but even happier that I will have forgotten it, or the question, by the time i wake up sometime tomorrow/today.

Only too pleased to have brightened up your day!

I have to admit that I am one of those that has looked across and wondered what those numbers were. And now I know :)

We'll have to add it as a question at the AFF quiz night :)
