Parties are now in play....no precise detaials.

It could be an alliance....but Macquarie normally take over companies rather that work with them.

Dear Sir
Qantas Statement
Qantas said today that it has received an approach from Macquarie Bank and the Texas Pacific
Group on behalf of a consortium they represent. The approach is confidential and incomplete and is
being investigated by Qantas.
Qantas also said it has undertaken over a period of years discussions with a range of individuals and
companies, including airlines, on possible partnerships, joint ventures and acquisitions.
Qantas confirmed it is in compliance with the Australian Stock Exchange Listing Rules.
Yours faithfully
Cassandra Hamlin

Should not complain I guess as my shares just went up 20%:)

The deal could be anything. How are they going to add value???

Perahps McBank is seeking to form a Glaobal airline by fitting QANTAS with another airline????...and then to float it off ata huge profit...

And of course...if married with another airline or two...what happens with our QFF scheme...and acrued points???

Depending on the partner airlines this could lead to a positive...or negative enhancement:?: :?:

As pointed out on P46 of the AFR this morning, there is a lot to be gained in this for Macquarie and associated businesses (particularly MAP & GATX).

It would be interesting to see if it would speed up jetstarification!

Macquarie Bank owns Sydney airport!

I can see it now: Qantas flights depart/arrive SYD ONLY, JQ for all connections to/from other lesser ports.

Interesting times ahead. I am wondering now if it was just the right time to get out of the QF program and switch to AA. Worst case scenario is that I need to start a new program once MacQF (do you want fries with that?) is in existence. I guess there is a lot in it for QF (not the pax of course) in that it would give QF access to more international capital through MacBank.

I think though this just crystalises the fact that QF is going to change dramatically in the future - whether MacQF exists or not. As much as we bleat and complain we must resign ourselves to the fact that QF is not going to be the quality airline it was 10 years ago.

I noticed Macquarie are also building a sizable highway (toll road) in the US in conjunction with a Spanish company. Seems funny an Australian company doing this considering we only have pathetic (and dangerous) goat tracks to drive on compared to the US highway system.

Oh, I forgot! It is in Macquaries interests if Australians fly interstate rather than drive; even more so if this Qantas thing goes ahead.

Hmm, operating as QF ex SYD and JQ on the return flight  .

If Macquarie do get involved, I imagine a whole new set of fees will be introduced.

A lot of people will make a lot of money off this deal: shareholders in QF (does the Govt still have a shareholding?), the current QF exec team (just think of the contract buy outs), the bankers, accountants and lawyers (some of whom have probably already made a packet getting to this stage) and the MacBank shareholders (thats my and your pension funds ;)) but the one people who wont make a mint - well IU think you are one stop ahead of me (via SYD that is).

And in news just to hand, Mascot is to be renamed Macquarie Town after the takeover, all streets will be tolled with electronic tollling, the botany bay foreshore will be resumed for a new theme park and shopping experience, long term parking facilities for the airport will be relocated to Wollongong.

Yes interesting times ahead but let's hope sanity prevails and QF is left alone. It is a very successful company and does not need a helping hand from Macquarie Bank.

Just in case I think it is time to use up all those FF points.

Anyone for Star Alliance?

Would be difficult if they were blocked out from using SYD.

Whats that sound I hear ??? gee its the second Sydney Airport debate murmurring in the background.

You have a good point there! If Macquarie Bank purchases QF then they want to make it difficult for other carriers to use their airport. Don't we have a law against something like that happening? Like the media ownership laws!

And Macquarie Bank wins the contract!

or even PBO-TPR via SYD  .

And I bet they'd add buses to those charged SYD "landing fees", not to mention the charges for all the many meals needed en route.
