Spirits soar as a who’s who celebrates 100 years of Qantas (probably paywalled; try 12ft – Hop any paywall )

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has given the biggest hint yet that his successor will be a woman, during a speech to the airlines’ gala dinner in Sydney on Friday night.

His comment came as the airline cemented its position as Australia’s No.1 carrier with a no-expenses-spared gathering celebrating 100 years of operation, and attended by a who’s who of politics, business and the entertainment industry.

Mr Joyce asked guests “how good it was to be dining under the wing of an A380” before paying tribute to “the most amazing female management team” including Loyalty chief Olivia Wirth, chief financial officer Vanessa Hudson and Jetstar boss Steph Tully.

A-section attendees included magnates Gina Rinehart and Lindsay Fox as well as the Mr Albanese, Nationals leader David Littleproud, Mr Morrison and Mr Hurley.

Qantas Loyalty CEO Olivia Wirth shared her table with Westpac chief executive Peter King. Macquarie Bank chief Shemara Wikramanayake joined former foreign minister Julie Bishop, who was wearing a striking sequined dress – and Toowoomba “royalty” John and Dennis Wagner also got an A-section seat.

Top-tier frequent flyers and celebrities dominated the B section, while Qantas employees and media filled sections C and D.
