Sorry for making this a main thread as I suspect this may be more appropriate on the newbies thread but given I have travel imminent to the US, I thought I'd break this out to a main thread.

I will be flying business class from Sydney to Los Angeles (via Brisbane) next week as a Qantas Gold. It is my understanding that I am entitled to check 3 bags at 32 kgs per bag. Checking the Qantas baggage website I noted that it mentions the maximum dimensions for each bag must add up to 158 cm. I noticed that one of my bags is structurally broken and don't feel confident packing things into it, even though I probably could get one more trip out of it. Checking Amazon I see I can get a 78 cm bag for around $100 which has the dimensions of 53.5 x 32 x 79.5 cm for a total linear dimension of 165 cm (which is slightly over the 158 cm limit). However, this measurement include the wheels which are 7 cm in height, meaning that if you exclude the wheels from the measurement then the size goes down to 158 cm (i.e. right at the linear dimension limit).

My question for the forum is whether Qantas would accept the bag?

I suspect you’ll be fine. I’ve never seen a tape measure whipped out at a QF checkin desk.

The challenge with big bags is keeping them under weight.
