Qantas checkin

I recently flew Qantas economy to NZ. As Pt FF, and the flight was a QF number, I went straight to the 1st class checkin, only to be told that this flight was shared with Jetstar and I would have to check in at their counter. Somewhat gabberflustered that I couldn't checkin a QF flight at the QF checkin, I walked to the Jetstar Starclass checkin, and was told that my Pt status wasn't recognised. I pointed out that this was a Qantas flight number, but to no avail - I'd have to join the economy queue. (I eventually got my way.) If I fly any other associated airline anywhere in the world, my status is recognised, but not Qantas' own carrier? Remember, this was listed as a normal Qantas flight, and paid for at the Qantas fair. I complained to Qantas, and was told that this is the way it is at the moment. Anyone else experienced this? This one never mazes to decease me.

That is standard procedure; you have to check in with the operating carrier. Qantas ( and other OW benefits ) do not apply to jetstar

I still find this strange. If I check in with Cathay, or BA, Lan Chile etc, my status is recognised. Why not Jetstar if I've paid for a Qantas flight? Time they changed the system.

The reason, as wrong as I believe it to be, is that Jetstar is not a member of OneWorld and the benefits you mention from CX, BA, LA etc are all OneWorld benefits.

Keep complaining to QF. I understand your annoyance with the policy when you have purchased a QF fare on a QF flight number. I understand that there is need to check-in with the operating carrier, but I think its reasonable to expect a QF latinum FF member using the QF flight number to be able to check-in at the StarClass check-in counter for a JQ-operated flight.

Don't disagree with you about the need to keep complaining to QF, as one day when all but the LAX/LHR flights are tranferred to JQ ...... BUT in relation this specific incident, I'd imagine there wouldn't be a StarClass counter open for JQ flights to NZ, as it doesn't operate on those flights.

Your status only applies when checking in for a flight which is BOTH marketed and operated by a OW airline. Check in with a codeshare , then benefits do not apply unless that codeshare partner is a OW carrier. Same with Jetstar

Remember that Qantas <> Jetstar and that different rules apply to each

Except when it is to JQ's benefit to be considered "part of the Qantas group", such as in marketing and promotions

This flight was marketed by Qantas, and it was a Qantas flight. I was using my FF points (lots of them). I expect the Qantas perks when I choose them as my carrier, no matter which plane they use. If I wanted Jetstar quality, I would have paid for them, and saved the Qantas flights for something better. I understand that Jetstar aren't OW. I'd feel better if I was told at the start that it was Jetstar with a Jetstar flight number. If I fly on a Qantas ticket, I want the Qantas perks.

It was not operated by Qantas though. As I said i, OW benefits apply to flights marketed and operated by OW carriers.

Whenever I have made bookings, they have always informed on the operating carrier when booking ( even Qantaslink is mentioned )

If you want the perks, then you need to ensure that you book on an appropriate flight. At least on a Jetstar booking you still get lounge access

Dave,

Understand - just find it frustrating. At least I had an excellent breakfast in the lounge.

And I'm sure if you really check you will find it was a Jetstar flight with a Qantas codeshare, and on the Qantas FF website would have had a triangle 'operated by another carrier' next to it.

A new Ferengi level for QFF? ;)
I was always taught to watch my Ps and Qs. Well I managed to keep my eyes on the Q this time, but that blasted P managed to sneak off my keyboard and head to the pub for a few beers. Its back in place now and has been severely reprimanded.
