50% extra Classic Award seats on selected international Qantas flights*^

For a limited time only, you can take your pick of thousands more Classic Award seats on international Qantas flights worldwide.

We're releasing 50% extra seats in Economy and Premium Economy for travel between 1 May and 30 June 2009 than were available yesterday, all at the fantastic Qantas Classic Award seat points level.

For example, as at 26 February for travel in May and June 2009, the total number of one way Classic Award seats available on Qantas flights† is:

14,000 seats - between Australia and USA
30,000 seats - between Australia and Asia
14,000 seats - between Australia and New Zealand
10,000 seats - between Melbourne/Sydney and Europe

Over 1 million Classic Award seats on selected Qantas flights around Australia*#

Around Australia, for a limited time only you have a massive one million Qantas Classic Award seats to choose from on selected domestic flights in Economy and Business for travel between 1 May and 30 June 2009.

The Great Qantas Classic Award Seat Release for international and domestic Qantas flights is available for a limited time only:
For bookings between 26 February - 31 March 2009 (unless seats sold prior)
For travel: 1 May - 30 June 2009

Received email tonight that QANTAS has doubled the number of Classic Award seats available for a number of international destinations over what was available yesterday (in Economy and Premium Economy). Also announced was 1 million classic award seats domestically in economy and business (excluding a few locations such as Darwin etc)

Interesting numbers. For example 14,000 one way seats are now available for May/June for Aus <-> US. That would imply that normally there are 7000 for this period, or 3500/month.

That 3500 would mean around 1750 Aus-US and 1750 US-Aus, or around 60/day each way, split between the various destinations in Aus (BNE/SYD/MEL) and the US (JFK/LAX/SFO).

Other routes:
14,000 seats - between Australia and USA
30,000 seats - between Australia and Asia
14,000 seats - between Australia and New Zealand
10,000 seats - between Melbourne/Sydney and Europe

Excluded routes:

Re: Great Qantas Classic Award Seat Release Promotion

It's funny how the mind works ... I got this email, quickly scanned it, and the 50% figure stuck out, along with the xx,000 figures. With the SQ promotion in mind, I quickly thought perhaps QF are doing the same (ie. 50% off selected routes)... that lasted a whole 2 or 3 seconds until I read the promo properly.

Don't know whether to say "good on QF for releasing the extra seats" ... or "is this just marketing spin for seats they can't sell in the downturn and were always going to be released by yield management for redemption?"....

Marketing spin combined with a further release.

X has been available on many flights I have looked at in the last few months; far more than I have noticed in previous years around this time.

I received the emal but did not take any notice.

I think most of us will take more notice if Qantas offers some discounts to their award rates rather than the marketing spin and releasing more seats.

Ditto....

Though hopefully after trying this first the discounts will come next.

Though they often have 20% on a small number of routes...

What's the marketing spin that everyone's complaining about?

If there are actually extra seats available, how is that "spin"?

Marketing spin of course, but I'd bet the bean counters want to reduce the FF liability. OK for it to be high when ticket sales are good, but you'd want to reduce it as somewhere in Qantas there would be this large number on the wrong side of the balance sheet.

From the customers perspective it's good which ever way you look at it. :D ;)

- Good for customer
- Good for QF as they reduce liabaility
- Good for QF since they fill seats that may otherwise be vacent

Now just waiting for a % discount. Like SQ offering at the moment, and offering great discounts on upgrades also for corperate customers. Not sure if anybody else got that mail from SQ since i dont know if it went to AU corp customer or only Singapore based customers.
