Hi,
I am going to be picking someone up at the Qantas domestic terminal in Sydney. I have Qantas Club membership and Silver Status. Can I go into the lounge even though I am not flying that day?

Cheers

Technically not, but I have done this in the past - if you know the flight details and ask nicely, and the lounge isn't that busy (not likely these days) then you might be lucky.

According to the lounge access rules, only Qantas Platinum Frequent Flyers can access the Qantas Club lounge when they are not flying OneWorld or JetStar on the same day.

(Sorry to sorta-hijack the thread)...

Does anyone know whether WP status allows any-time access to the new Business lounges, or just to the Qantas Club itself?

Thanks - you've saved the potential embarrassment of actually being in the wrong when confronting the lounge gate-keepers!
Same goes for the international First Class lounges. Anytime access is only for International Business Class lounge, not First Class lounge.

Not sure how it's supposed to work, but I've often gone to check-in in the QP and just showed my FF card (gold....can't remember the acronym) at the entrance and never been asked for any flight details. I've always wondered if anyone would notice if I didn't actually go to the check-in desk.

When I was SG (I think that's the correct acronym around here...!) I encountered the same thing 90% of the time - I think they just assumed you were going to check-in in the lounge, especially if you had a carry-on bag with you. A couple of times when I was challenged I simply stated that I hadn't checked in yet and was allowed into the lounge (of course that was always the case).

At mid-sized lounges (i.e. single multi-purpose-service desk on entry) & the new domestic business lounge, I have witnessed the next piece in this conversation being "may I check you in?" with the dragon grimacing (/smiling) & motioning for the card.

  • any-time access to the new Business lounges - No
  • [any-time access] just to the Qantas Club itself? - Yes
I still manage to get in to the BNE Business Lounge, both departure and arrival, and most times into the SYD Business Lounge by just showing my Platinum card. The worst that is going to happen is they will send you to the Qantas Lounge next door. YMMV.

I'm only a QC member but i have gotten in when not flying by just showing my card. Last time my partner was flying to brisbane and we just rocked up and i showed my card and we wandered in. I was carrying her carry on bag so it looked like mine anyway...

Luck of the draw i guess.. you can just say you didn't realise you couldn't go in!

John,

I have also entered both SYD and MEL J Lounges when not flying. Both times I was with people who were flying J and I took them to the airport and was allowed in to the lounge with them.

I think the dragons vary the rules a little at times.

On Melbourne Cup day 2 years ago, on a day trip to Adelaide flying Virgin (booked by my client) but holding a gold FF membership, i attempted to access the QP for the sole and specific purpose of watching the big horse race.

After sprinting from the kerbside after the cab ride, and arriving at the QP entry desk with 2 minutes to spare before race, i was unceremoniously turned away by the door gargoyle as i was not a Platinum member or flying with QF that day.

Even pleading with the gargoyle about the historic nature of the race, promising not to eat any food, consume beverages or even relieve myself in the facilities, i was advised that "If i had a problem i should consult the rules relating to my Qantas club membership, and if i felt aggrieved, to take it up with management".

Sitting in the public arena moments later to cool off and wipe the sweat from my brow, i then received a phone call to say that i had done my (limited) dough on the race - and watching it would not have been pleasant in the first place. [Still not the customer service response i appreciated from Qantas]

I have had that too. I just smile and say, I am not flying, just here for lunch :).

They don't know what to do :)

As far as I know, in the domestic terminal you can go in anytime you want. Since they don't screen for boarding passes at security, you can just waltz in, then just show your membership card at the Club desk.

I've never been asked to hand over my boarding pass in the Club on the domestic side. They do in the international terminal.
