I have a choice for Qantas Club
I either join as a partner membership or under my works Corporate rate (either way I have to pay)

I believe the partner membership would be cheaper by a small amount, would there be any difference ? With the Corporate one, I might be able to claim it on tax.

My partner was lucky, working for Woolworth's membership only cost $200 (for one year!)

Whether it is valid for a tax deduction will be down to the work travel rather than which scheme you purchase under

I can't see that there would be a great benefit of buying a separate rather than partner other than your continued membership is dependant upon the main membership being maintained

Depends how long they're your partner!

From the T&Cs

3.3 Partner memberships are available under the following conditions:
(a) Partner membership is only available whilst the Primary Member is a current Qantas Club Member and whose account is not in default.
(b) Partner membership must be equal to or less than the membership period purchased by the Primary Member.
(c) The Partner must reside at the same address as the Primary Member.
(d) Only one Partner membership is permitted per Primary Member.
(e) A Partner Member who ceases to reside at the same address as the Primary Member, must return their Card and either relinquish their membership or, with the agreement of the Primary Member, pay the pro rata difference between Partner and Primary membership rates to upgrade to a full membership.
(f) A new Partner can only be registered once the existing Partner has returned their Card and either relinquished their Partner membership or upgraded to a full membership.

I'd be inclined, if it's only a small difference in cost, to take out a corporate membership (and if it's claimable on tax, that's even better). But it all depends on your circumstances.

I guess if you took out either, and something changed, you'd have the other option to 'fall back' on.

That's funny, what's going to be more stable- my continuing flights with qantas or my ablity to stay in a relationship ?

Other thing to consider might be what happens if your partner gets status of SG+. I think right now, the best bet would be the cheapest option. If things change, you can always get corporate membership here or elsewhere for just a bit more!

what happens if your partner gets status of SG+
So does a Partner member automatically attain the same status as the Primary Member (e.g. if the Primary Member is SG, the Partner Member is granted SG status too)?

No; however as a SG or higher you're entitled to a guest at QP's and other oneworld lounges when travelling on a OW carrier.

QP members can have 1 guest when they have access to a Qantas Club/Qantas Business Lounge.

SG members can have 1 guest when they have access to a oneworld lounge.

PQP members can access QP when not travelling with the QP partner.

Partners of SG cannot access oneworld lounges when not travelling with theie SG partner.

I wouldn't worry - you can move freely between membership types at renewal, so just pick whatever is cheapest.

As long as you renew, you don't pay the joining fee, and Qantas have no problem moving from corporate to individual to partner or any switch you are eligible for at the time.

As there is no functional difference between any of the memberships, just take the cheapest option.

As always YMMV. i know of a current partner life QP member who's associated main membership is no longer maintained.

I think the real criteria (or at least how it is checked / enforced) is that the main membership must be current at the time of renewal of the partner membership.

Partner life makes this check somewhat redundant.
