First post - saw this subject was last covered in Nov 2009 but not, I think, more recently. Panic being caused when subject brought up at a party last night and 1001 different views were expressed. I'm concerned about what exactly I can carry on board a Qantas flight in April from Brisbane to Heathrow via Melbourne and Singpore in the way of hand luggage. My case is exactly the stated dimesions but if I pack my laptop into it they together weigh 6.7 kgs and the laptop takes up 90% of the space. Someone said that Qantas don't count laptops (even though mine weighs 3.8kgs) and that they can be carried on in addition to your case. Someone else said she put hers inside a large handbag, which again is not counted. The problem is that there is nothing about 'personal' items on Qantas' web site and no-one has travelled in the last few days, these views are several weeks/months old. Does anyone know what Qantas' current practice and attitude is at the present time, ie this week?
A second matter puzzles me. I'm travelling on a domestic flight to Melbourne and then changing to an international flight to Heathrow, via Singapore. I take it that my checked in case is transferred automatically but I suppose there's no problem taking the slightly larger international cabin baggage onto the domestic first leg? And is the weight/size check done again at Melbourne and maybe Singapore too?
Finally can anyone recommend any particular travel insurance company? It's just me, going for 4 months.

Welcome to AFF jacercat ... :D

In economy from Australia to Europe you are permitted to carry on one bag and one personal item.

The bag can be no more than 7kg (in practice you can generally get away with 8 or 9).

The personal Item can be a hand bag, it can also be a laptop case.

Until recently this personal item information was published on the Qantas web site, but apparently not at the moment.

Columbus Direct seem to be very reasonable for travel insurance. There's a link to it on this site. What's more...if you join this site as a gold member, you save 20% on your Columbus Direct travel insurance - but you must use the link to get the discount. For us, paying the gold member fee will save us around $80 on the normal Columbus premium so we're still ahead :)

Columbus seems to have everything we need and, with the 20% discount, it will be around $360 for the two of us for two months in the USA. I've looked at numerous travel insurance options, and most seemed to range between $500 and $800.

jacercat, welcome to the AFF ... :D

I usually travel with Qantas- aproved (and sometimes sold) wheelie bag - and for easy and convenience carry my laptop in its bag - saves opening the larger bag at security screen - and have never had a problem in J or F.
This is what the Qantas website shows:
All InternationalFirst/Business/Premium Economy:
2 x 115cm (45in) bags or
1 x 115cm (45in) bag plus 1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag
Economy:
1 x 115cm (45in) bag or
1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag
7kg (15lb) per piece

Yes, but until recently it had information regarding personal items.

Note the mention of a laptop bag. It appears to be out of context - this is due I believe to the removal of whole sections regarding "personal Items".

FWIW, I travel Qantas amost ATW with a rollaboard and a laptop bag as carry-on with no issues.

Serfty, just wondering if you have ever been asked to put your rollaboard on the scales - I know I haven't - don't even think about weighing it Ye a friend of mine last year - she was travelling with Thai - did have her carry-ons weighed (and she was travelling J, with an upgrade to F from Bangkok to LHR) - wonder if different approaches by different airlines, or what?

Several times re the scales (~1%) and anything under 10Kg seems fine.

I've never been asked to weigh (almost exclusively use J check in/bag drops now, love being OW-S)

I travel most of the time with a rolly + a laptop sleeve that goes over the handle (I for one love/need the personal item rule as my laptop is a brick!)
I also usually have a small camera bag slung over shoulder...

On my most recent trip I points-upped to J and took all that + a poster tube (going to conference with presentation materials)

The system here is like but no where near as bad as the USA where if they actually enforced the on-board rules 8/10 people would be in technical violation. The USA is shocking since most airlines have checked baggage fees BUT allow the gate checking of items that will not fit in the cabin for no fee... Total joke...
