Hi. Apologies if this is a double up as I couldn’t find reference to paid searches, only award multi city issues.

I am trying to book a business multi city booking from NZ to Australia with $$$. I want to break up the trip back with time in other Australian ports on the way home but it only allows J on the NZ to Aus leg and then the remaining flights Between aus capital cities in Y even those within the 24 hour transit rule. Even when you have the option of choosing a different flight it only lists Y options at either no cost or more $$$. Preferred routing with sample dates:
CHC-SYD 19/5
SYD-BNE 20/5
BNE-MEL 21/5

I also noticed when doing a point to point booking in J ie CHC-PER, the same thing happens. J for trans Tasman and then y for domestic leg with no way other than to click through on each option to check if domestic leg in business but most in Y.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are the Y sectors on JQ? Perhaps that’s the cheapest multi-city price and QF is just showing those limited options?

What‘s happens when you select a higher fare bracket on the multi-sector search?

Also, something like ITA Matrix and/or Google Flights should give you the correct options and pricing to look for.

Thanks for the guidance, flights are all on QF and you can search by lowest fare or highest flexibility, but while the he high flexibility does show some in J it’s not all the options or segments.

I’ll try google flights to find the options and see if it matches on QF. Cheers

I wrote about the issue known with the Perth fares on FT about a month ago when I was looking for work.

For some reason the QF search engine will bung you onto Y trans-continental SYD/BNE/MEL - PER but have the trans-Tasman (TT) sector in business. Initially I thought this was because there is no I class fare published from NZ - PER, but even when you go business saver/flex (for J/C/D where they are published fares, it still spits out in Y). It has led me to think that QF don’t want thorough fares NZ-PER sold to maximise their yields in some ways.

If you really wanted, you can use a travel agent to price it all out. There is a 35 day advanced purchase D-fare for AKL/WLG/CHC - PER via the east coast for $2890 NZD + tax. An I-fare SYD-PER itself is already $4k NZD….

I haven’t tried the QF call-centre yet, but I suspect they would be able to price the itinerary out properly all in business for you?
