Qantas Domestic Business (J) Seats

Hi all,

Can someone please help me distinguish between the different J seats in the Qantas domestic fleet. ie. 767, 734, 738, and therefore which is the best. I'm only booking a SYD-MEL flight, but don't want to end up just sitting in a standard 3-3 Y seat config, with an empty seat left between myself and the other passenger.

What can I expect? For a reference, the last time I flew QF J was on an internationaly fitted 767 to Japan in their "Dreamtime" seats. 50" pitch from memory.

The 734 seats are the convertible ones and the ones to be avoided.

So then there is no difference between J 767 and 738? seatguru is listing 767 pitch as 50" and 738 as 37" but im not sure if this is just a reference to the International 767?? From what I can see from airliners.net, the 738 J looks mighty tight haha

There is no real difference between 763 and 738 in j unless you get an international config 1.2.2, the 763 will probably have laptop power but that is it, pretty much same legroom.
 
And you’d only notice pitch and space if it was an early/late flight with pax reclining, which I’d imagine doesn’t happen that often in the middle of the day?
 
Whilst the seats themselves may not be too different between the 767 and 737, I find the widebody cabin of the 767 gives a much more 'premium' feel than the 2-2 arrangement of the 737, and therefore enjoy the 767 flights more.
 
As previously noted, avoid the 734's. Qantas do also have a habit of swapping aircraft depending on what their needs may be.

Also the A330 does do the occasional SYD-MEL.

Thanks for all the help. To be honest though, I'm rethinking everything, and wondering if it's even worth the expense/points.
I've had some great experiences with Virgin paying the $30 extra for "blue zone" exit row seats. I couldn't imagine it would be that much different apart from no lounge access.
 
Having just flown MEL-SYD in J on a 767, I can assure you there is a difference between J on Qantas and exit row on Virgin. Whether it is worth the extra points or cash is a different matter altogether. But if you want to treat yourself then you will enjoy it.

Note you can also buy single entry passes to The Lounge (DJ's lounge offering).
