Qantas flexible fares?

Hi guys, so I'm just planning ahead here, but I am going on exchange next year to USA, just north of Los Angeles, so I have started looking for flights and am a little puzzled. I'm wanting some flexibility in my return flight, so if I choose to do a bit of travelling afterwards or leave earlier. So heres my confusion, I know that on QF (or any airline) there are the different fares with differing flexibility, but they all require you top pay a fare difference. How much do these fares usually differ when it becomes closer to the date? What do you think would be the best option, on any airline?

Not such a clear cut question unfortunately. It really depends on a lot of things.

Each fare booking basis has different conditions associated with it. Might be better if you can give us a run down of how long you're planning on being away (typically tickets have a maximum 12 month validity for the return).

As a general rule though, the more expensive the fare, the more flexible and lower change fees associated with it.
