Does anyone know if Qantas or Virgin Blue will ever fly from Avalon Airport in Victoria? I have had so many terrible experiences with Jetstar lately (3 hour delays to Hobart at Tullamarine) that i cannot stand flying them again.

Welcome to AFF

3 hour delays suck - thats for sure, but they are not the norm. I fly JQ quite regularly from AVV and dont experience delays, but when flying from MEL / SYD or BNE, delays (regardless of airline) are frequent. Blame the late pax, the sick pax who decides to get off the flight, equipment issues, weather or any other issue, the airlines do try and right the issues, but alas, not to everyones liking all of the time.

It is very unlikely AVV will be serviced by DJ or TT, Qantas - well who knows? Again I suggest the likleyhood would be quite low.

God help us if ever QF fly from there!
It'd be quicker to drive to Kingsford Smith from Melbourne than to Avalon!

I highly doubt Avalon has a bright future actually. I have been using their BNE flights on a weekly basis lately, during peak/off peak, and things have been really dead lately. I take it Tiger operating to Sydney is not helping their Sydney sectors. And just imagine the demand when Tiger wants in on BNE. Most of the time now its cheaper to just fly DJ out of Tulla.

Since NOV 01, I have done 29 JQ flights (#30 today) and of that, 19 have been either AVV/SYD or SYD/AVV with only 1 being AVV/BNE.

I find the OTD from AVV good, most of my flights are JQ602 - first of the morning with a scattering of QJ604 (when I miss 602!). AVV is slightly closer to my house than MEL but this isn't a major factor in my model for flying these short hauls on JQ.

I don't often see light loading on these flights, I don't think that AVV will grow, but there is a place for AVV as it stands now - I dont think there is a bleak future for AVV. We may start seeing Tasmania flights start from AVV in the future or even to SA, but reality says that where a hub is required from INT or QF DOm flights to QJ, the majority of the flights will be via MEL. Heathrow / Gatwick is a good example of what I am talking about as to why AVV wouldn't become the Gatwick of Melbourne.

The main thing that stops me going for a cheaper JQ MEL/SYD flight as compared to QF is the lack of QP...

and the food and amenities at AVV leave a lot to be desired... I have not been there in a while, is the new terminal open?

AVV is fine for those living S-W of Footiscray and serves their needs; the other ~¾ of Victoria's population tend to find MEL better.

AVV should be called Geelong Airport to be precise...
If Geelong (or West side of Victoria) has a big future, AVV has a future....
:)

I calculated that the cheapest option to get there from Melbourne suburbs will be driving, petrol cost will be about $8, so if you need someone to come and pick you up the price will be $16 petrol alone, excluding any tolls...

..

The south western suburbs in particular Wyndham Vale was recently listed as the highest growth area of VIC and the second highest growth area in Australia.
