I'm trying to find out whether Qantas 'soft-lands' those with Gold status down to Silver who don't reach the renewal number of status credits at the end of their membership year... i.e. if you didn't make enough to keep silver in a gold membership year, would you get to keep it? Assume a relatively new member without any chance of getting status comped.

It looks like this is something AA do, but haven't been able to find anything about this anywhere online with extensive googling. As you can imagine, any term involving 'Qantas' and 'Soft Landing' turns up a load of results with people referencing the opposite...

I don't quite understand the way you have worded you question but the answer is that if you are Gold and you do not get enough SC to retain Gold (600SC) they will drop you to Silver. If in the following year you do not get enough SC to retain Silver (300SC) you drop to Wood.

Sorry, should have reread before posting. Say one has gold status, and in the following year you don't fly enough to retain silver, let alone gold, what are the consequences? Do you lose all status, or just fall one level to silver?

Still a soft landing...you could be Gold and not set foot on a plane for the next year and still only drop to Silver!

Yup you'll only ever drop down one notch, no matter how much you missed the attainment level by.

Normally it is a one level drop; just not sure whether there was an exception if someone did not fly the requisite 4 QF sectors

Thanks all - have a lot of travel coming up in the next 6 months was going to be 40 SC's short of Gold by mid next year (and thanks to this forum, after doing some good pseudo-status runs, AKL-SYD on LAN and LAX-SFO on a Y-UP). But, with no travel on the horizon after the upcoming trips I was wondering whether to specifically go for Gold or just stick with attaining Silver.

Of course, I'm going to head for gold :)

Thanks for your help as always!

Note, I don't recall seeing any confirmations on what happens if you fail to get the four ~s in a year, as this is only a recent rule.

eg. If Gold one year, and then only fly on AA the next, or not at all, you would have no ~s
