A booked flight for five people including three small children has changed three times and hours on the phone trying to sort it out. Now back to original booking but can’t book seats together. how can this be handled without more hours on the phone to incompetent staff? Advice please!

This isn't good obviously but a couple of questions:

Are these QF operated flight(s) that have been changed? What kinds of circumstances were they? Are all five pax on the same booking? Is this a rewards (with points) booking or paid flight(s)? (should not matter, but may be relevant).
