Currently there are two types, the newer Audio and Video On Demand (AVOD) and the older continuous loop programming.

The AVOD is being rolled out and about 50% of the 747-400 fleet has been upgraded (the 747-300 will not get AVOD).

The AVOD system has experienced regular reliability problems resulting on the need to regularly reset the system in zones or the entire aircraft. This will be what your friends have referred to as the system being terrible. When AVOD works, its good.

The old continuous loop system is generally very reliable.

After using the AVOD the loop program is woeful like going back in time, the thing that gets me is that you say fly to Syd HK you get the AVOD on the way over and think bloody hell this good, then you get back on the plane on the way back and you try to operate the system which doesn't work cause it is the loop system and no-one tells you.

I've never once had QF's AVOD on a flight - always get continuous loop system. I've found the loop system to be unreliable too. Last trip a few months back it had to be rebooted mid-flight, and on a number of flights the menu system doesn't work on a number of screens in the cabin. It's a bit frustrating.

I've experienced AVOD on CX - it was great.

Content of the IFE on QF international is generally pretty good.

I have had AVOD on BNE-SIN-BNE flights on a number of flights and they have worked everytime without a problem.

The only time I had hassles with continuous loop IFE was on a SIN-MEL flight back in April where they tried rebooting it for me about 4 times and still did not work. No other suitable seats are available and I was provide with suitable compensation for my discomfort.

As usual it is horse for courses but I don't mind the programming with either the AVOD or continuous loop IFE. If I can manage to watch a couple of movies on the flight and waste some time playing games then I am satisfied.

Had no issues between MEL/HKG this weekend; AVOD worked fine.
