Sometimes you get very good deals by choosing to fly to NZ to start your trips.

Eg, the current Qantas sale (Note all prices are in NZD, so deduct about 20% for currency conversion)

Seats on sale until midnight Friday 12 June 2009, unless sold out prior.

Prices include ticket surcharges and taxes. For passengers departing from Christchurch or Wellington the price excludes New Zealand departure fee of $25 payable at the airport.

Limited seats on offer. Hurry, at these prices they will sell out fast.

Auckland/Wellington/
Christchurch to:
Manila Return Economy from $1199
Hong Kong Return Economy from $1299
Shanghai Return Economy from $1299
Tokyo Return Economy from $1299
Los Angeles Return Economy from $1499
San Francisco Return Economy from $1599
New York Return Economy from $1899
Frankfurt Return Economy from $1939*

Interesting..... thanks for posting!

Looking at some J trips in Sept to London and its a decent discount flying out of NZ!

AKL - London return Business = $8,175 AUD at current Xchange rates
SYD - London return Business saver = $11,185 AUD

Not taking into account departure fee ($25NZ) plus credit card conversion fee to pay NZD with an AUD credit card, plus you'd have to fly across the ditch - but you do have about $3000 AUD to play with to cover all of that - I'm seriously thinking about it!!!

Don't think you need to pay for the departure fee if you are leaving AKL, unless you are leaving WLG or CHC

To clarify, all AKL international inbound and outbound segments are charged at NZD13. This is included in the +++ paid when the ticket is purchased..

For WLG and CHC you need to pay at the airport for all international departures that are not a transit.

If you are doing multiple trips, I would suggest embedding ex-UK tickets inside.

LON-AKL r/t is a lot cheaper than AKL-LON

e.g.

For business

SQ for GBP2013 (AUD4072)
BA/QF for GBP2000 (AUD4045 )

and For 1st

the absolute bargain basement deal of EK for GBP2957 (AUD6016) which of course also includes the chauffeur drive service at each point on the journey plus the option of 3 free nights hotel accommodation in DXB if wanting a stopover; even valid on the A380

It never ceases to amaze me what Qantas (and other oneWorld) sales are on ex-various countries, so I try and keep up with various countries and their specials.

Things like Qantas Premium Economy Return from Hong Kong to London for ~$A1500 or Cathay sales ex-Korea which give great J prices to Australia and Europe.

Not sure if either of the above are still on sale, but there are specials at times...

Thanks Dave great tip! Could burn some points to get me over there 1 way and then start the ticketing ex UK from there....

I had been looking at something similar - LON-> Australia with Finnair to Asia then QF to Aus return is dirt cheap as well and the Finnair A340 J seems to have ok reviews...

Not a huge fan of EK but at those prices might be swayed...

I know it is definitely worth keeping an eye out. This may be a bit OTT but I actually set up a seperate email and subscribed to a heap of overseas versions of the OW carriers (e.g. QF uk, BA uk, FInnair etc etc) so i can keep on top of them all!!

EK First is very good and worth trying

Those fares, iirc, need to be booked by 30th June

The Emirates tickets can be changed with GBP300 fee; is not available direct from EK; need to use a site such as netflights.com
The BA/QF fare allows no changes ... can be booked from the BA or Qantas websites as well as the 3rd party sites.

+1 here. I've just subscribed to every Red e-Mail around the world. Call me crazy, but......

Can't work out how to get BA's specials newsletter though - need more time when I get home.........

I think everyone knows it, but Aussies get severely a**ed a lot of the time when it comes to airfares and specials. :(

There are cheapish fares ex Australia for those that are flexible on airlines and do not tend to care about frequent flyer schemes and so are not addicted to particular carriers. The UK market is different to Australia; people in UK are much more , imo, likely to be interested in price rather than carrier

eg SYD to LHR in business class,
AF has a fare of $4853 plus tax r/t
EK has a fare of $4599 plus tax r/t
SK has a fare of $4560 plus tax r/t
More expensive, but still less than 8k
QF has an I fare of $6044 plus tax r/t

AF has a v nice business class cabin with fully flat beds; fly (iirc) on a AF codeshare to Asia and then AF onwards ( also valid on KLM )

Still more expensive than the ex UK fares I mentioned ( which do include tax ) but do need to consider that the exchange rate to the UK is particularly favourable at the moment

QF isn't likely to offer fares as low as the other since they probably don't need to; people will come and use them anyway regardless

With the current exchange rates though, buying to Australia from Europe has some great offers

Forgive me, but is this OK to do? I like the idea, but will Qantas allow it? If i book a ticket on Qantas Aus site then another on Qantas UK site, they won't have a problem if i use these tickets 'in combination' as it were? If not great!

Also, might reduce some of the benefit of this, but Bestflights now have Qantas biz class to London/Frankfurt for just over $6k plus tax. Not bad...

If you were to travel in on a carrier like SK and return on QF , no issues
Travel out on QF and then embed the EK F , then no issues at all
If desperate to stay on OW on both trips, there is CX ex London for < GBP2000

If you were to do QF embedded within QF , you could conceivably get a problem for back to back ticketing

After recently trying out AF business, personally I would use the AF fare to London and then the Emirates 1st class fare embedded. For a total cost of $10869 plus tax, get a r/t in business plus a r/t in 1st on v good airlines.

Dave

Which BA/QF fare are you talking about here Dave? I thought the normal change fees changes would apply for the J return ex UK...
