Hi Just booked

London - Melbourne return in J A380 for Pounds Sterling 3135.00 or AUS$4860.00 not too bad.

Just went to QF website and changed Location to UK to book

That's a great deal! Are you starting your journey from London? Or can you get a fully changeable ticket & change the London leg to the second flight?

Would have to be starting in London as the Qantas UK website doesn't let you select cities outside of Europe as your starting point.

Its not bad atall but yes you must depart from London it would be good if one could reverse the legs but sadly you cant.

Ahh - always nice to see the topic of old threads making a new appearance!

Yes, it beggars the imagination - but fortunately have availved myseld of this possibility a few times when travelling to the UK twice in the year or so.

As has been reported before - if going MEL or SYD to LHR - look at fares ex SIN and get a cheap flight up to SIN - that saves plenty as well! And more often than not, can choose to fly on same flight all the way!

Another route to consider is SIN-HKG and then book to Europe from the HKG airline website. Of course you have to factor in the time/$ of getting from SIN-HKG, but it can still be worthwhile.

Also, booking SIN-MEL on the Singapore JQ site is cheaper than the same flight booked from AU (as part of a return MEL-SIN-MEL).

Thanks for all the tips - am just a bit confused about how you book airfares internationally - by using an engine like expedia..?
Its such a maze out there...am trying to fly cheaply to asia somewhere and then pick up a premium economy or business to malta (which only emirates flies into) - or fly elsewhere into europe..then onto malta if necessary.
If I go to dubai from sydney and thats in economy then thats the long haul - want to do the longest part with more leg room - but the prices on mixed fare are very steep and I've looked at so many options am going crazy...would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks

To book an airfare internationally, go to the airline's normal Australian home page and then choose your departure country. For example with QF it is the top right hand side; JQ top left; BA choose "Country of departure" from the left hand main panel. Other sites will be a variation of the above. Some web sites default back to your home country (that of your ISP) without telling you, so you need to keep an eye on that.

I am heading to Germany this year and here are some of my search results which can give you an idea of the benefit of 'country shopping' for an airfare as opposed to just comparing airlines. All bookings are from the country of flight origin.

QF Y+ MEL-xSIN-FRA $5500 return to give the base Aust based price (all prices are AUD with some rounding for clarity)

JQ J MEL-SIN $700/$900 (without/with points and SCs)
JQ J SIN-MEL $550/$700
I consider JQ J to be the equivalent of QF Y+, or close enough, but with J SCs and points.

3K Y SIN-HKG $300 return

BA Y+ HKG-xLHR-FRA $1650 return

(QF Y+ SIN-FRA $2500 return)

If you don't mind the extra flights MEL-FRA $3550; $2000 less than QF Y+ direct, and about 180 SCs more.

I expect that you would find similar results with Malta, perhaps better as I was sticking to OW carriers.

Jetstar operate 1 and 2 class planes, so I guess that means that if they need to do a plane swap, the route may lose J class. I find that JQ J is about the same as QF premium economy; that is, wider seat, better legroom, better food, priority boarding, and if you pay extra, J SCs. I have flown with them a few times MEL/SIN and have always been happy. I don't normally fly with them domestically as I don't think their Y compares with QF or DJ.

I am still learning to tread the AFF 'boards' but this will probably have been covered elsewhere in more detail.

I'm not a fan of Jetstar "business" and will only fly them as a last resort. I usually do what I can to fly into KL instead of BKK, as I much prefer Air Asia premium.

Seen CX J LHR - SYD return for a little over 2800 GBP all in recently - not too bad (via consolidator circa 3000 GBP via CX UK website)

Yep, took advantage of that myself. It even included Easter dates so I'm flying out of LHR the night before Good Friday. £2785 all in to MEL (in the old J) via ebookers. Now just have to work out which FLounge to use in HKG during the renovations. (Have ~2hours outbound and 2:40 inbound)
