Hi all
I am flying MEL-SYD on Friday at 16:45. Will this flight get an actual meal or is that only after 5PM departures?
I am wondering whether to upgrade and if the food is non-existent then I wont bother at all...
Cheers

Even outside of "meal times" the food in J is "proper", at least compared to the muffin they throw at you in Y :)

At that time of day WHY gets some savoury item like dips/crackers. You also get complimentary wine/beer in WHY for this cityflyer flight.

J certainly gets something more substantial, but it would not replace a meal.

Personally, I'd not bother unless you need some extra "Millennium Seating" space for the hour flight.

I wouldn't bother wasting the points. Enjoy a drink in QC, and enjoy a proper meal later in the day.

Well it's only 5K for the upgrade for once and it is a tricky time of day. I wont get home until 7PM and by then mrssimongr will have probably eaten so if it had been enough it would have been an easy choice...

I guess I will have to survive on cheese and wine in the QP at my usual seat...

At that time of day they could well be serving something like a steak sandwich or prawn salad in J. I often travel on the citiflyer between BNE/SYD and they're often whats available on that route.

The steak sandwhich is on a par with something you'd get at a regional agricultural show ( fond memories of field days).

The Prawn salad actually has proper prawns in it (always a bonus).

Wouldn't it be cheaper to purchase something to eat and save the points for another day?

It would be cheaper to buy in $ terms but then I would need to buy and eat at 4:pM before boarding rather than around 5PM. Also "cheaper" is a relative term. If i have plenty of points then they are worth less than actual cash.

Hey, if it was me, I'd go for it. 5000 points is what you pick up as a status bonus every 450SC's, so you're really just using up the bonus points anyway.:D

And, I know you share my preference for slumming it in the premium cabins, so would be 5000 points well spent.

Back when I was having my flights paid for I'd always go J on the domestic hops and always between meal times. I must have had about 50 of the mid-morning mid-arvo quiche things and to be honest they're not too bad. Not enough to replace a full meal, but it did the job. One can generally down 3 Crownies or a few mid-range wines (esp on a 737) so I'd probably go for it if you have the points to spare.

Done and confirmed :)

As it was only 5k it was worth a punt :)

Good choice Simon.

I hope you get the very nice steak sandwich, I have had a few lately and they are well worth the 5000 points.

Add a couple of drinks and the flight will be a dream.

If one values FF points at ~2c each then that steak sandwich is worth ~$100. It had better be very nice. ;)

I do think it is nice, maybe not $100 nice:oops:

However 5000 points for the upgrade I do consider good value due to the complete service.

I guess it's too late now, but I'd just eat at the J lounge when I land or get something proper later...

I really should know this, but have never been able to accurately determine what sort of snack/meal I can "look forward to" :) on a flight. What are the actual times when you get a meal as opposed to a snack?

The only time criteria I am sure of is the Cityflyer after 4pm service. But, if a flight is delayed and so departs after 4pm, is the wine then free on that flight?

I thought it was 5:00am-9:00am for breakfast, 12:00noon-2:00pm for lunch and 6:00pm-8:00pm for dinner. So a flight scheduled to depart at 8:05pm is only a refreshment servcice.

I have been on flights that were due to depart before 4:00pm and departed after 4:00pm and have been given complimentary alcohol. I have also been on flights that were due to depart between 5:00pm-6:00pm and were delayed and then given dinner. I guess this is a gray area and could be up to the CSM to decide what happens on delayed flights.

They tend to do it based on Schedules, so if your flight is scheduled to depart before 4pm then generally not even if it departs late. However, sometimes it does happen - YMMV.
