Okay here's a potentially dumb question I have. Can't find anything recent here. If I've missed it, please let me know.

I've just booked my first ever domestic multi destination trip.

Day one I'm flying Canberra to Melbourne.
Day two I'm flying Melbourne to Sydney in the morning, then 7 and a bit hours later I'm flying Sydney - Hobart (via Melbourne).

Question is: is it possible to check my baggage from Canberra to Hobart (which is my final destination before return trip Hobart - Canberra via Sydney 6 days later)? I can live with a small carry-on bag for Melbourne overnight, and really don't want to have to hump my big bag around in Melbourne for the day. I'm working for a day each in Melbourne and Sydney then heading to Hobart for some recreational bushwalking....

Entire trip is under ONE booking reference number.

Thanks!

No.

Day one CBR/MEL: On day one as your trip terminates in MEL you will need to collect your luggage in MEL & take it with you to where ever you are staying that night.

Day two MEL/SYD/MEL/HBA: You will need to check your bags in MEL/SYD then collect them before rechecking them again for SYD/MEL/HBA as you cannot have bags transhipped via the city of origin ie MEL cannot appear twice on the one bag tag.

You may be able to checkin the bag in SYD immediately after you collect it which would save you lugging your bag around all day, or if still too early get a locker at the domestic terminal & arrive back at least an hour before your flight so you don't miss the baggage close off.

Not sure how far ahead in SYD you can check bags in but in BNE it's 6 hours but I'm not sure whether all capital cities have the same rule.

Lockers? Where are these?

Next to baggage claim on the ground floor. When you go down the escalators (not the escalators closest to the railway station entrance - the other one), you'll see all the chauffers waiting then make a u-turn & go past a coffee shop & they're down the back.

It's been awhile since I've been to SYD so don't know if they're still there.

If it was me & I couldn't do the whole trip with hand luggage I would choose to checkin the bags SYD/HBA in as soon as possible after arrival in SYD from MEL as it would be a real PITA to have to get the stuff out of the locker & do the bag drop later in the day.

Thanks, Babe.

Can anybody else confirm or deny the existence of said lockers?

Qantas list baggage storage as next to Carousel 5. (I've used a storage facility there, but not for a while - but they are still listed)
Sydney Domestic Airport (T3) Guide

I used it in the last couple of months. Still there. If no one is around just pick up the phone, they are not far away. I'm pretty sure it was still ion at about 6 or 7 pm. Hours are on the web.

Ok the qantas website has changed a bit. When I used it the storage was operated by the same group as per T2, Smartcarte. Check out the Sydney airport website for baggage storage in T2 for contact details. I'm sure this info was on the qantas website previously.

Thanks. I'm arriving in the morning so I imagine that this is a peak time when they'll be open for business. It's listed on qantas site as being there so I'm happy.

I just double checked. I use it on 9 June arriving at about 8am. The desk was unattended at that time.

So upon completion of the trip.

Day 1 bag checked through to Melbourne. Flew down, collected my bag.... storage facility downstairs as discussed above, $15 for a large suitcase.

Day 2 collected bag at 630am - had to pick up the phone on the wall but the attendant arrived in 2-3 minutes to open up. Someone there from 530am.

Checked bag through to Sydney. Collected bag at other end.

Yes, Ozbeachbabe, it is SIX hours everywhere where you can check in your bag before your flight. I had to wait half an hour, but the coffee made the time fly.... One thing, a QF rep in Melbourne told me that apparently you're not supposed to check in your bag and then leave the airport, but..... I used bag drop, already had my boarding passes from the day before.... So my bags were then checked through to Hobart via Melbourne. Saved the money on storage for a second day.

Went to work in Sydney without having to carry an excess bag. Back to airport into the business lounge for a feed. Food def better than in QP. (Too bad the wifi wasnt working in either syd or mel that afternoon..... (first world problems...))

Easy. :p
