Just joined the site, and it looks very interesting, pretty much got glued to it yesterday, well done to all the contributors.

I am a Qantas Platinum member, gained 95% through work travel.

My question is, can i use the Qantas Lounge even if i am not travelling with the airline.

Welcome to AFF paul25 :D

Yes, you can employ Domestic Qantas Clubs at any time and, also, International Qantas Business lounges even if you are not travelling with Qantas/Jetstar/oneworld.

The rules provided for no access to the Domestic J lounges or Qantas International First Class lounges unless you are travelling Qantas/Jetstar/oneworld.

This is documented on qantas.com here:

Lounge Access - Qantas Club and Frequent Flyers

You cannot access the Domestic J lounges or Qantas First Class lounges unless you are travelling Qantas/Jetstar/oneworld.
Maybe not documented on Qantas website but there certainly has been anytime access to Domestic Business Lounges for over 12 months.

Thankyou for the prompt reply, answers my question...thanks.:)

Actually, it is documented as a negative:
Qantas Domestic Business Lounge
Platinum:
Member's next onward flight that day must be on a QF, BA or JQ flight number. Member and 2 guests. Guests do not need to be travelling.

Fly - The Qantas Club - Lounge Access

It seems this rule is not enforced much, if at all.

Let's just say that the times I have tried to access the Qantas Lounge in SYD and BNE when not flying Qantas or not flying at all I have been encouraged by the staff to use the Business Lounge instead of the Qantas Lounge. Make of it what you like....

Only the other day I was turned away from the QP when dropping by without a flight with two guests and sent to the J lounge.

The only time I have tried to access the J lounge (when not flying), it was in MEL, I had a friend with me flying (zero status), I was dropping him off and going to wait at the airport for his flight, turned away from J at MEL and told to use the QP

BNE, my theory is the front LD is supposed to check your BP and send you right or left, however, the catch here is you can get a BP in the J lounge - therefore your OWE card gets you through the right hand door.

The LD in the J area assumes you have shown your BP to the first LD and takes little notice if any at all - I have often wandered into the BNE J lounge and after the first LD there has been no check at all.

SYD however, I have been asked for a BP every time I have entered...

Funny how the rules change up and down - maybe with the new BP system, a scan of your OWE card will be required for entry?

Just like they used to do with the magnetic strip readers through the last 10 or so years (more-so in MEL).

Interesting. I was taking a friend flying DJ out the other week and I decided to come into the MEL J lounge whilst waiting, with him. I was let in no problems. The lounge was empty and the QP was heaving though. Was a Sunday afternoon. The rules are far from consistent.

Right now the MEL J lounge is sparse too, and the QP is heaving. I like the MEL J lounge much more than the SYD one :)

I'm surprised they don't require it already. Surely it is of commercial value to know how often each pax visits the club.

Maybe Qantas are waiting until all or most eligible members have the bar codes on their Membership Cards.

At present they do have a paper list that they cross numbers off so they can have a view of how many of each tier are through in the J lounges. Surely a swipe of the mag-strip wouldn't be difficult at present.

That said, RFID is coming in. Lots could happen:)
