I have checked today with Qantas and the price to HK in J from SYD is around $7,400.00!

The customer service guy I was speaking to when I asked why it is so expensive said that Qantas is a full service airline.

This seems really expensive - what do you think?

I would say it's overpriced not expensive (Expensive is all relative, so i dont use it in this context), but its just an example of the denial QF is still living in about the quality of their Premium products and the prices charged as a result.

The only reason QF can get away with charging these sorts of figures is because their main market is corporate suits who probably dont even know what their flights costing the company...if it was up to SME's and Leisure, the price would drop considerably.

Like anything, its all supply and demand, and as long as the market (albeit the corporates) are willing to pay that, thats what they'll charge.

Personally I wouldn't ever pay 7.5k just for a HKG point to point and very few of my SME Corporates would either.

QF knows their market and what they can get away with, I guess. For a direct SYD-HKG, have you considered flying with VS? For random dates in May, I was able to find return pricing for around the $5200 mark in J.

But are the corporates always paying $7.5K? Some of them would surely have discounts and rebates with Qantas that may reduce the fare paid somewhat.

And whilst oneworld dominates this part of the world that always reduces price sensitivity. Also accounting for the fact that Virgin Atlantic is not part of a global alliance there is no inter-alliance competiton on the direct service between SYD/HKG like there is on other Asian routes such as SYD-PVG, SYD-BKK & SYD-SIN and non Asian routes like SYD-LAX, SYD-SFO, where star alliance and oneworld compete head to head (and in case of LAX & PVG with skyteam as well). Don't know if that's a factor or not.

Oh of course if you had two return trips, the price comes down to a mere $5.8K by nesting a ticket bough ex HKG for $4.1K ....

There definately would be some, especially some of the larger corporates who would have cheaper corporate fares specific to them, though how much cheaper they would be I don't know, but as far as standard corporate fares go (which i've got access too), there's nothing currently for HKG, so $6900 + taxes, is about as cheap as I could ticket it for my SME's.

It is expensive but as its similar to BKK or SIN at $5500 J saver or $8-9,000 in flex J. It's a long way (compared to Eur or even US) to get out of here and QF and other airlines know it, with a captive market.

But i do agree I generally find a Oz HKG to be more expensive to get to and dont try and go in Feb.:evil:

Good point raised re: VS offering.

I have actually been able to obtain a CX J class fare through to a major city in China with Dragon Air and back to Sydney via HK with CX for $5,400.00

I was really surprised to see that the QF fare was almost $2,000.00 more expensive.

In addition the guy I spoke to at Qantas seemed a little surprised when I mentioned that the fare was very high. This is when he said perhaps it is because Qantas is a full service airline.

I haven't flown CX for a while in J or Y, however, I would assume that the level of their service would be similar to Qantas?

At least CX they seem to have a fully flat bed!

cx tpe..jpgGo via TPE and save yourself some money, the service connects well with CX and is not a bad SC earner either @ $4000 if you must do J to HKG?

Click on the pictures to get a large image but you wil find that they are screen shots of the airlines booking pages - QF and CX. A travel agent can probably put them all on one booking to make the transfer a smooth one re baggage etc.

Its interesting to note that my last trip to HKG was booked in R class for a good-value Premium Economy fare. And that we in Feb. So there are some good fares to be found, just not in business class.

So if you don't want to pay the business class fare, then consider purchasing a discounted premium economy fare.

NM,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I do normally fly with Qantas in PE as I find it very comfortable and J is over priced in MHO.

However I have to fly with a client and therefore J class is has to be.

BTW I did also check the PE price sand they were around $2,500.00 SYD - HK - SYD

What I find hard to swallow is that the Qantas fare to HK at $7,400.00 is pretty much a UK J class fare with most other carriers.

Whilst I am not an expert at all in regard to the J pricings, just wondering, for 7.5K, would be just a little more before you can get say DONE, or at least DCIR fares?

What does DONE and DCIR mean?

D = Business
ONE = One World Explorer
CIR = Circle Asia/Pacific fare

Just looked at the prices at OneWorld website:

I have used DCIRCs a fair bit. The only issue is the overnight somewhere else. But they are cheap (my guys are using them to get to BKK and HKG on an upcoming trip).

Thanks Edison - checking now.

No worries. There are a lot of other people in this forum who actually use this will help you a lot more!

I only reason I know about this is, even though I have never used it, is that I have been in this forum far too long. Too many acronyms such as DONE/DCIR are used here on a regular basis!

I suggest a DAS13 would be a better option than a DCIR22 or a DONE4.

A DAS13 is $5599 plus taxes. You can get an AAS13 for $7399 plus taxes.
