Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I’m a huge fan of this. When you’re landing in the evening it is so much better for you to stay up and be awake.

It’s easier to put a mask on if you want to sleep, but if you want to stay awake it’s much harder with the lights off. Light from your device can only do so much.

I always figured the lights off strategy employed by airlines was a tactic to reduce their service levels.i

I wouldn’t be following SQ’s example at all. Apparently their SIN-JFK service is absolutely brutal for jet lag, even in J.
I have not flown the SIN -JFK so not sure what time it lands, but just recently flew SIN - Newark, which arrives at about 6am. I found it excellent for minimal jet lag.

At that was straight after having been on the MEL-SIN flight with only about a 90 minute transit.

And normally I suffer more jetlag from eastwards flights compared to westwards ones.

I only really did the long flight for fun, and as I was curious. ;)

If we talk about SIN-NYC (rather than individual airports, as the timing has changed) I've done the equivalent timing of SIN-JFK (arriving in NYC around 6pm) at least three times, and found it also excellent for minimal jetlag. In the other direction I've one both timings ... 6am arrival and 6pm arrival and likewise both really good for jetlag.

I guess Non Stop Dan must be really inexperienced then 😅

Jet lag affects people differently

Yes it does. I didn't suggest at all that Non Stop Dan is inexperienced, but just because he experiences jetlag badly on a specific flight doesn't mean everyone does.

I actually find (perhaps as I am getting older) the lead up to such long flights (and even not so long flights) is an important determinant of jetlag. Whilst last few SIN/NYC non-stops were fine, I had terrible jetlag after a flight back from LHR to SIN a couple of months ago - and then I realised it was probably 1am to bed and 5am to rise on in 2 of the three days leading up to the flight, including the day of departure, that didn't help (the other day I got ~6 hrs sleep).

Ah the old jet-lag argument.

No jet-lag arriving into Thailand to begin holiday.

Jet-lag arriving into Australia after holiday in Thailand.

I wonder if that's just a coincidence on most trips.

Does it make a difference whether overnight or day flight back? Although well known that eastbound travel can give rise to worse jetlag than westbound travel.

I believe @JohnK was in jest referring to not possible to have jet-lag when heading on holidays, but returning from holidays is just not nice and throw in jet-lag.

I'm not sure arrival time matters that much although most flights back are overnight.

I'm not arguing for or against jet-lag it's just it does not appear to have any effect when going on holidays as at least for me I hit ground running and play golf almost immediately. On return the mood is depressing so jet-lag may be more noticeable.

Fits more with the ‘no jet lag going westbound’, but ‘jet lag going east’ :)

I try and fly my RTWs all westbound. Seems to work for me :) Although a trip last year back from Europe was eastbound, the 14 hour sector from AUH seemed to do the trick much better than the short overnight from say singapore.

I just came across a rehash article about the sunrise planes and the product, but it got me thinking.

If QF intends for this sunrise version to eventually take over PER - LHR from the 787, does that mean when QF moves terminals at PER, they would rebuild the lounge with a small F section at PER as the a35K would be carrying F class.

It’s supposed to replace PER-LHR.

AJ said it would stay

QF has 4 slot pairs at LHR, 2x sunrise, 1x PER, 1x SIN.

(2 pairs on lease to BA but I assume QF has put them on notice that it needs them back).

The question was would QF build an F lounge in PER when they move terminal.
I guess it will be space permitting, but I’d imagine they would want to at least to provide a better level of lounge for plats and above.

There will need to be space for the JQi flights too unlike now where JQ fly out of T1

Well that's what I mean. Whether QF build an F Lounge (even if its a smaller section inside the main J lounge) as they talk about wanting to tern PER into a hub for Europe (not just LHR). Having a35K with F flying would certainly help the argument.

Yes, I should have better phrased that. My understanding is the Sunrise planes will fly over PER (not necessarily to/from).

I'm confused by what you mean. via? over?

AJ's thoughts was SYD-LHR & MEL-LHR non stop, then the existing PER-LHR will remain but upgraded to A350 which is more suitable to the route. He also said he expects SIN-LHR to remain.

Of course, now QF are getting standard A350s as well, they might use a standard A350 for the route, or even a ULR with no F.

…and AJ is not there any more
