Are they worth the $49.95 Qantas reail them for and has anyone in the group got spare tags for sale?

IMO not worth. But I've never really used them. But if you don't fly enough to get them free then you probably don't need the minor convenience gained. Bit of a catch22...

As medhead points out, if you’re not flying enough to even get to Silver and claim 2 free tags, you probably don’t need one. The bag injectors will print a label for you to attach to check-in luggage and that will work just fine.

The Q bag tags do work quite well though, not had any problems with them and I do think it speeds up the process, though probably only marginally quicker than the machine printing a paper tag for you to attach to your luggage yourself.

As for the price, you can get 2-for-1 in the Qantas Clubs at the moment, that’s how I got two of the red ones. They’re quite nice, but not looking to sell any sorry. Sometimes they do appear on eBay for massively inflated prices though.

Welcome to AFF!

Surely you cant use someone else's Q-tag? Wouldn't each tag be pre-coded with the owners FF number and details?

If they can be transferred, I suspect my wife will be willing to part with some of her 5 tags.

You can. The tags are coded to a booking reference each time you check in, not a QFF number.

How has your wife got five?

I have two as WP and they have been used once - by my NB mother!

She was originally sent two as a QP member. Then during the great debarcle of 2011 (ie the fleet grounding), she was compensated with another tag. However, that missed flight cost her making silver that year. She complained and they decided to give her silver. With her silver pack she received two more.

Seems totally pointless having more than one anyway given the domestic bag restrictions in Y.

They're virtually worthless unless you're allergic to putting your own paper tag on your bag.

Internationally they cannot be used.

Domestically, when checked multiple bags in J, the paper tagged ones come out within the first half dozen bags, the Q tag ones come out mid pack or worse. Every time. So I dont bother any more and ask for paper tags. Interestingly I passed this comment to the checkin agent who acknoweldged she'd been told that by quite a few people!

Spend your $50 on booze at the airport.

[-]Pis[/-]* Is she the only QP member to get tags?

I have 2 I bought in the lounge, 2 from my Silver membership, 2 from my Gold membership and 2 from my Platinum membership. If my math is correct, that’s 8, but I like having spare tags incase I lose any ;)

But my mum, dad and sister are also all silver members, so in the family pool there’s 14! :p

The family pool has two SG and two WP. They are still in the original packaging as are unlikely to ever be used by us.

I don't feel the urge to do the DYKWIA thing and put them on carry-on as IKWIA and that's all that is important. :p

By the time we got our Gold tags we had already reached WP so we have a couple on the shelf still in the boxes, chances are slim we will use them as I don't do a lot of domestic travel and you can't use them on int flights. Actually gave one away as a joke Christmas present to a mate overseas :D

I had my platinum ones on my bags but I think I have taken them off - not even sure where they are - wife's gold (partner gold) tags are still in the box - half tempted to ebay them...

Not worth $50, in fact even if $5 I wouldn't bother. Bit like me using my home ink to print a boarding pass, why?

Matt

I gave two of mine to my parents as they actually find doing the paper tag thing fairly tricky.

Just remember not to put spare qtags inside your checked bag as the RFID chip inside the qtag can be scanned through the suitcase, so what could happen is the one inside your bag gets activated & when your bag arrives out the back in the baggage makeup area the qtag on the outside of your bag will not scan as it won't have been activiated when it went through the auto bag drop.

The end result is the baggage handlers won't know who the bag belongs to or more importantly where it's going.

Depending on where you live, you get even less benefit. Last time I travelled ex Darwin they still attached a label, and didn't use the Q-Bag Tag, although from Sydney it arrived into Darwin without a hitch with the tag.
