Hi, Im flying out of LA on QF12 at 10.05pm just wondering if anyone knows what the earliest check in time was? We are arriving from San Fran in the morning with Virgin and would like to explore LA for a bit, instead of waiting at the airport.

Thanks,

Paul

At LAX TBIT, check-in for QF flights generally opens 3 hours before departure.

LAX QF check in used to open at 2pm with full ticketing from 4pm but LAX has reduced it to a 4pm open now due to a lack of available check in desks. EK uses the same check in desks for their flight, and once that closes and they clear out, QF opens.

If you arrive in morning from SFO just go to one of the hotels nearby (free shuttle) and get a day rate room. Day rate rooms are from 0800-1700. Sheraton four points etc etc. Just search for hotels near LAX. This means you got somewhere to put you bags, somewhere to freshen up etc etc. And then get a free shuttle back to LAX. Can even use their swimming pools...

If you can store your luggage somewhere ?? they are not keen on onsite luggage storage at LAX, especially TBIT I would catch a cab to Santa Monica Pier and the nearby third street promenade, it is a good sample of the LA lifestyle.

The is a luggage minding facility at LAX - they collect from the kerb and deliver back to you at an appointed time.

I'll dig up the details later.

More enhancements...

Serfty - any names of that company?

Had this issue a couple of weeks ago
Catch the hotel shuttle to Marriott West Century ,leave bags with bell hop, tell them you will be checking in later that day, they will store bags till you return,
A nice tip keeps everyone happy

Well its not the customers fault either....many people would arrive at LAX with time to spare, wanting to do something better than waiting around a terminal, (we don't all have lounge status), but cant because there is nowhere to put your luggage.
And as for arriving just in time for the flight so no wasted time, who is going to risk that for an International flight home.
Airlines and airports tell you to get there hours early, yet wont take your luggage off you, or in some cases don't even open the terminal until 1 hr before the flight.
This is not just an LAX problem either.

Airlines are totally at the mercy of the airport owners so it's not a case of the airline not opening checkin when they want to but when LAX Airport tells them (QF) they can have the checkin counters.

If QF checkin opens at 1600 that is still 5 hours before your flight departs.

555pm? That early?

A year ago I had to wait until 630pm - but the flights left later due to to it not being "summer" time in Ca.

[The eatlier info in this thread is four years old.]

Handy. Flying out next week although we switch DST (but that doesn’t change dep time ex-LAX).

Looks like QF11 first out followed by QF94. Does the one checkin section do all four QF flights?

Yes. They open a handful of desks around 6pm, then open others in the same section closer to departure.
All the check in counters at TBIT are Common Use (CUTE) which are shared between all airlines. The airport schedules which airlines can use which desks at which times.

Current scheduled departures for QF LAX flights
QF11 0820 (JFK)
QF12 2230 (SYD)
QF94 2240 (MEL)
QF16 2320 (BNE)
QF96 2355 (MEL)

As soon it’s open you can check in for any of the QF ex LAX flight - you can be first in queue checking in for QF96.

The very end counter is F then next 2 are J and so on

And I was getting ready to provide suggestions for how to spend a day in LA until I noticed the dates.
Isn’t there a whole thread on that topic? I should search for it. Still pondering things to do before collecting luggage from WeHo and schlepping out to LAX for 6pm checkin. Heading Downtown the day before. Maybe shopping in the Beverly Centre can kill a few hours...

So much nicer / easier to fly in from elswhere and just transit Dom to Int at LAX.
