I was on QF7 SYD to DFW when there was the power outage at SYD International and our bags did not get loaded.
I was told to put in a claim at my final destintation and I did that.

Anyone had this issue before?

They advised they would be sending the next day but so far no word.
Any idea how long it would take?
What are your expereinces?
Anyone lost baggage and had to claim from Qantas/AA?

You wont see it until Monday at the earliest if they put it on the next QF7 service which is leaving today, unless they are routing via LAX which I doubt.

Given that this happened to many QF7 passengers, I would not be surprised if Qantas do send via LAX.

I would expect that most affected by this flew on to the Eastern regions of the USA, not staying at DFW, so there's little need to await the next QF7.

Also, QF7/QF8 are weight restricted and I doubt there's much capacity for additional baggage.

It also happened to a number of services to LAX, so they will have similar issues re capacity but at least will have been able to shift baggage yesterday, and weight restrictions wont make that much difference, 300 pax baggage is only 6T and the weight restrictions are more on QF8 than 7.

I have not been able to talk to anyone that can locate my bags.
Called baggage services at Qantas LA and NY but only got answering machines.

Anyone got any suggestions on what I can do to get the to find out where my bags are?

I was told to lodge a report at my final destination MCO so I did that with AA.
Go that reference number but their website keeps saying have not found bag.

I'm trying to get a hold of Qantas as I don't think they have handed it off to AA.
Need to find out if it has left SYD Australia.

The airline rep did say it was leave SYD the next day for LAX but unable to contact anyone here in USA about it.

Need a contact in Qantas who can case it down.

Finally able to get ahold of someone at Qantas. Used twitter to contact @QantasUSA.
They responded and finally found my bag, being set to MCO then to the hotel.
Hopefully it will be delivered some time tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Good news ...

There was something like 4000 bags that didnt make flights that day from SYD due to the power outage. All airlines are in a mad scramble to get bags moving to their final destinations. A number of bags have been sent from SYD to LA to then again be sent further on. As the airline person advised the best option is to make a report at your final destination with your contact address or phone number.

Airlines use a system called World Tracer to locate missing bags. The missing bags are lodged into the system saying we have this bag with this tag number. Your report is also lodged saying Im missing this bag with this tag number. When the two match up the bag is forwarded to where you are. Its not an exact science and does take sometime to match all the bags up.

Unfortunately this wasnt isolated to QF but all airlines so everyone is madly trying to get space on any flight to get the bags moving.

Best suggestion is to stay in contact with the local airline baggage services you lodged claim with as they are your best source of information. And also dont loose it any them in frustration as they are working hard to get all the bags moved

Hi aoz48x, I can understand the issue it's just that I lodge the issue with AA and they had no idea about the bags for 2 days.
I think it was because they did not even have it on their system until it arrived in MCO tonight.

AA uses a different system then world locator so it wasn't until I contacted Qantas and got them to lodge it in that system that they found the bag, that was done quickly. As soon as got the original carrier involved they where able to find the bag and they sent this information to AA who then was able to organise the bag to be sent to me.

It was just frustrating not know who had the bag and who to lodge it with.
As I had no extra clothes or toileties I had to spend US$86 getting a taxi to the nearest mall to buy essential supplies like undies and shaving stuff like that. I will be talking to the airline about claiming that back plus the cost of the supplies!

Did you get a tracking number?

Tracking numbers are effectively useless. the Baggage tag barcodes are only used for "routing" and not for tracking. Qantas is having sooooo many issues on the 7/8 service it isn't funny. I got rerouted via LAX on 16 July when QF8 was scheduled to divert to AKL and friends who flew it a week or so later, connecting from FLL on AA, had their bags go missing for a week and qantas had "no idea" where their bags were until they randomly showed up in SYD and were sent onwards to MEL where QF had the nerve to ask them to come and collect them. After not so polite objections, hey were eventually couriered later that day.

I have never had issues with tracking numbers. Each to their own I guess.

glad to hear ur bags are on way back to you.

this is one thing I worry about, mind u never thought it would be a whole plane / several planes affected.

I'd be stuffed if it happened to us! As we board cruiseship after our arrival, doubt they would go to the effort to track us down on the cruiseship. would hope that the cases would be returned to our home address in West Aust though .... Wouldnt really enjoy the cruise wearing the same clothes that we left West Aust in!!!!!

am planning on packing clothes for each of us in each case, so even if 1 bag is lost then we still have clothes for each of us.

Hope you are reunited shortly with ur luggage,

This is why I always arrive the day before when flying to connect to a cruise ship.

eg: if the cruise leaves on a Wednesday, I will arrive at the port on Tuesday and spend the night in a hotel (in Sydney I choose Four Points Sheraton because it's a short walk down Sussex St to the main cruise wharfs).

It also means that you don't have to worry about missing the ship if the plane is delayed :)
