@AFF Editor we have tix booked Syd-dfw in December but were just notified flight times “changed”. They also apparently cannot get us from bne-syd for new flight time. Upon searching this route it appears QF7 is only bookable until October 26 October, then from this date onwards the route is via LAX or the AA flight. Is qantas QF7 being removed altogether?

Welcome to AFF @Cathqld .

Is this a paid or points booking?

Can you give us some additional detail? What is the new flight/timing for SYD-DFW and have they given you any new flight BNE-SYD?

Often they do give you unworkable alternatives - you have to call. Unless you have high status with QFF, you'll get an offshore call centre. If the flights you have are unworkable, DON'T ACCEPT any on-line suggestions. Research flights that are workable for you (make some dummy bookings), then insist that these be the replacement flights. If going via LAX, be aware that you'll need to clear immigration and customs on arrival ("enter the USA"), then go back through security, so you'll need at least 4 hours connection time to allow for arrival delays. If the onward flight is on the same ticket (it will be), you will be looked after if you miss the onward flight, but it may be on a much later flight.

This assumes its a paid flight. If its points, its more difficult.

The offshore call centres are often clueless; they may just say "a refund or nothing". If you can't make headway, hang up and call again.

My DF7 SYD-DFW December just got retimed today, so something is afoot.

Looking at EF, it has been zeroed out and, as you said, removed from sale.

They aren't likely to cancel a flight to their US joint venture partners mega hub.
October 26 is the start of the (Northern) Winter schedule season. They may want to change the timings and need to confirm slots with DFW

MEL-DFW still appears unchanged at this point, but it only runs a ew days a week.

When an airline cancels an international flight like this one, they are responsible for rebooking you so that you can depart on that same date. That may involve having to put you on a partner like American, or a competitor, like Delta, but they need to get you to your destination. If they did not, this would represent a breach of contract which in most commonwealth countries is something that is actionable. Additionally, they are required under Australia Consumer Law, namely articles 19 and 26 of the 2003 Montreal Convention and Amended Acts of 2003. So if I were you, I'd look at Google flights, see what suitable alternates are available either with OneWorld or elsewhere to get you from Brisbane to your final destination and offer it to them. If they refuse to rebook you as required by law, record the phone call with them, book the flight on your own then take them to QCAT/court to get reimbursement of flights.

It makes no difference under the law. A ticket is a ticket. Using points to pay for a flight is exactly the same as using cash. At the end of the day you still have a contract with Qantas to transport you from point A to point B.

The offshore call centres are often clueless; they may just say "a refund or nothing". If you can't make headway, hang up and call again.
That is sound advice. Refund or nothing is not what the law says. The law says they must either refund you what you paid or re-accomodate you on the next available flight, your option!

As mentioned earlier there could be some schedule retiming going through the works.

Is your final destination DFW or elsewhere in the US? Sometimes these schedule hiccups can work in your favour eg BNE-LAX-xyz.

If you stood to earn more pts / SCs flying via SYD and DFW, you can still claim ORC even though you might be flying a more direct route.

Did a dummy SYD-DFW booking for April 2025 and QF7 appears to have a new timing of departing at 10.25am and arriving at 10.45am into Dallas

Looks like it will be more attractive for same day flights onwards to the east coast now that QF11 is an evening service. Interesting flights on the way back to Australia are untouched in timing.

But northern hemisphere period between October and March are not showing. I wonder if Qantas is pausing flights to plug gaps elsewhere given they have very little planes that can do long haul flights over the summer period.

OT, but it’s said that Australians are born with a PP* in their hands but apparently, Canadians have the Montreal Convention in theirs? 😁

*a saying coined before Oz PPs topped current pricing! 😳

Hi @RooFlyer and @mbell1510 ,
Thank you for your kind and very useful information. I did not search past December 2024, so interesting to note these legs return in April 2025.
The new flight time provided was indeed similar to the ones you noted in April, departure time of 1150. Our BNE-SYD flight to make this connection was originally later, and I am see earlier flights available and although I can make many dummy bookings for 9 passengers (only 2 required but just to get indications of seats) the call centre states these are not available to book for existing bookings, just new bookings (am at a loss to understand how this works). We originally booked DFW as wanted to avoid entry into LA, as travelling East first and wanted to avoid the long flight times.

Our multi city flight was booked with cash, and have made a couple of calls to the call centre today with no success. (Am very well versed with the “hangup and call again process unfortunately”) 🙄. Will they again on Monday. I was insistent they book a suitable domestic connection time and they have apparently put in a request with the flight revenue department. But after doing further research and seeing there were no QF7 options at all I grew concerned and did not want a last minute Qantas initiated cancellation during busy and expensive holiday period. Thanks again.

I would think since this schedule change process is clearly ongoing that QF will revook the domestic connection appropriately since it seems your trip is on the one ticket.

Not sure why the CC would say you couldn't change, but I should think it should be rescheduled diring the next few days.

I suspect due to the summer schedule flights being zeroed out, I suspect this is why. I imagine a big rebooking process is being undertaken in the backend.

Fingers crossed you don't have to go to much effort to get your trip sorted.

Aside.. I like the new timing in so.e ways, but suspect it is aircraft utilisation based more than anything else (which caused the retime of the 11)

Imo

It makes no difference under the law. A ticket is a ticket. Using points to pay for a flight is exactly the same as using cash.

It makes all the difference when dealing with airlines, especially Qantas. A points ticket will only be accommodated by the next available point seats that are available if you’re lucky. A revenue seat can be accommodated by a new revenue seat which are far far far more numerous.

My understanding is that because Syd-Dfw is now retimed to leave earlier, the OP needs an earlier Bne-Syd domestic flight to make the connection. Assuming it is booked on one ticket (PNR), it does not matter if it is paid with points or cash. Qf should and WILL open up a seat on an earlier Bne-Syd flight to make the connection to the retimed earlier Syd-Dfw flight. I would give it a few days to be sorted...if not I would ring again until it is!

Earlier this year, I had an award ticket on Qf Syd-Mel-Hnd in J. The Mel-Hnd was changed to Mel-Nrt and brought forward to an earlier departure meaning I could not make it to Mel from Syd that morning....had to fly the night before. A quick call to Hobart (OK I'm lucky as I'm platinum), and I was offered either the direct daytime or overnight Syd-Hnd flight instead in J.... I grabbed the daytime flight with glee :)

I got the email about the time change for QF7 this morning. A little inconvenient as I now need to take an extra day off work, but I'm assuming the flight will still be running.

The QF MMB website is very confused though - the email tells me to accept or change the new flight. However there's no accept option, the change option gives me "We are having trouble processing your booking. Please try again or contact us if the problem persists. (3006)" and I can no longer select/view seats as "You are ineligible for seat selection".

Seats have been loaded back into the system, so you should be able to call to get it sorted out if you wanted (or you can wait a few days):

The contract is outlined in the conditions of carriage. This sets out the carrier’s liability to you in the event of disruption. This does not guarantee you a seat on any airline you choose. Qantas says they will uplift you on the next available flight on their services, or offer you a refund.

Article 19 of the montreal convention does not compel the airline to reaccommodate you. It says the airline is liable for damages in the event of delay. But you would have to take them to court for that, which could be a very expensive exercise.

Can you please show under ACL where an airline, if they cancel a flight, is compelled to reaccommodate you on any carrier you choose? We don’t have an EU261 equivalent in Australia.
