Qantas reveals A321XLR cabins

Qantas have revealed the cabin interiors for the A321XLR fleet.

The seat designs are basically identical to those found on the A220 fleet. The A321s will not have PTVs, with Wifi and streaming in both cabins.

The first 3 A321s will be configured with 200 seats (20J180Y). Subsequent deliveries will be 197 seaters (20J177Y).

Very disappointed with the new cabins. For leisure travellers there is no reason to fly with QF vs VA.

As a business traveller I used the IFE to stream a movie while working. I don't want to save or stream any movies on my work laptop.

As a leisure traveller when travelling with my kids, we don't bring an ipad and headphones for each person. We use the IFE and only use the ipad as a backup.

We will survive without it but this puts QF on equal footing with VA domestically and knowing QF they will put this on international flights such as PER-SIN in the near future vs SQ. QF would have to be cheaper than the competition since everything else isn't better.

For the longer routes Qantas aren't increasing the seat pitch.

In one version of Jetstar they used to have the inseat music with over head screens, I am surprised they couldn't go back to that.

IFE screen for business class would have been a good extra feature, although now have 20 seats in business helps with the upgrades.
 
It's interesting to see that QF is thinking of the 321XLR as a replacement for the 737 fleet as the workhorse where as customers like AA is thinking of it as a premium longer haul single aisle plane for their top premium transcon routes or Int'l premium routes.

Which imho makes little sense for QF. Why wait for the XLR for mainline and not also start 321Neos too for mainline.
 
I hope the new WiFi hardware can keep up with everyone streaming video. The current 737 WiFi can sorta do it, but not reliably.

I admit I'm disappointed. I was hoping for seats closer to what Cathay have in their A321neo - not lie flat, but still a lot better than a basic recliner.

I agree, I flew the CX A321neo last week HAN to HKG and they offer a very good product in Y and J - good seats, IFE with bluetooth connectivity etc.
I was really hoping that is what we'd see at QF...
 
No IFE! So basically the same product as VA now!

Will that be 2 toilets for Y!!?
Certainly going to have to start timing those toilet stops well with more competition for the two cubicles. Might have some queues in J as well if it's 20:1

It will be interesting to see how things land, whether 220s come into the mix on some previous but lighter 737 routes, as 321XLRs up-gauge the busier 737 routes

Agree internationally like PER-SIN - without flatbed seats in J, they will struggle to compete with widebodies. It will be a shame to lose them transcon in J as well.
 
What's going to take the place of the extra three seats in subsequent deliveries? More galley space I suppose?

J seats are pretty average. Even Y+ on QF has more legroom and IFE!
 
Disappointing about the omission of IFE in J, but I do like the J/Y cabin separation.
It appears to be the same as the current design, unless I've overlooked a photo. I would have preferred a physical cabin divider, similar to what is found on the E190s, I believe.

That top photo sure looks like a curtain across the aisle, if so is that physical enough?

QF has a lot of 2002/03 737 deliveries (they came in big numbers after Ansett collapsed and AA cancelled orders). The 321XLRs are the replacement and an upgauge. The XLR provides more freight capacity on any route, and future flexibility if a better aircraft (like a MOM) comes along.

Doesnt it lose freight capacity vs 321NEO which has more than enough range to do everything domestically and transtasman.

That's the part that I'm confused about. The 321XLR is extremely versatile but is there a need to get the XLR to run Syd - mel or even transcon to PER.

I would suggest that while the initial batch of A320 aircraft are 321XLR, later orders may be different variants
