Does anyone know what it means when the the Qantas seatmap becomes unavailable for a particular class for an international flight?

Can I assume that a class is filling up if the seatmap becomes or is unavailable for a cabin class on a QF international flight?

Tks

MelUser,

You answered your own question. :D ;)

Two main reasons (assuming Qantas have that class on a flight):
  1. The cabin is approaching (or is) oversold
  2. The cabin is well undersold
Both are for commercial (in confidence) type reasons.

I found economy was unavailable abt. 2-3 mo's out on this yr's and last yr's trip to states.

whereas, two yrs. ago i was able to see economy until aprox. 4-6 wks. prior to trip.

Hence the astronomical (at least compared to previous years) number of op-ups people are experiencing on those routes.

I have tried by way of example and cannot see any Economy seat maps for QF93/94 MEL-LAX-MEL for random dates across November.

I wonder whether Qantas are simply not making the maps available or is it that flight is full and everyone is getting an OPup/points upgrade etc etc.

This typically happens when cabins are either:
  1. very full/oversold or
  2. very empty.

At the moment all flights are packed in Economy.

I came back from US Sunday and speaking to CSM, he said that QF is overselling economy and this artificially fills Premium, Business and First. He said that Friday night (when I left) Qantas had to put up 30 passengers in LAX hotels - all had confirmed seats but because of oversell there wasn't enough room on the plane.

I am confused about what to read into this for a ruture booking.
I have a flight booked to jfk in december, no economy map is available on expert flyer - so I assume from above the flight is over or undersold. when prompted to choose a seat on the qantas website the economy cabin is largely (about 30%) unallocated- does that mean these are empty seats? and the cabin is undersold?

yes i've checked seat counter and it is still showing aqvailability of 9 on the more expensive economy fares (on the syd-lax leg) there is much more cheap class availability syd-jfk then syd-lax (and for a while the fares to jfk were cheaper than those terminating at lax, both on 107, odd).

I was able to access the economy map with EF on 31/10 for flt. departing SFO on 2/11. I was pretty surprised as I had not been able to access prior to dep. from Aust.

The map showed economy was pretty empty but I was told on actual flt. it was full.

I was upgraded to business with my pts. request. Cabin downstairs rows 23-26 had 10 people in it.

This often happens as the seat maps go into pre-flight mode a few days before the flight. At this stage Qantas have actually moved their working seat plan to their own internal systems and changes/allocation do not always show up on the Amadeus view that EF provides.

You would have seen a lot of Blue boxes with X in the seat maps (

I had confirmed by the nice lady in the QP today that yes my SIN-FRA flight is very empty, with 100 spare seats at the moment so I currently have 3 seats to myself

Had friends that left last night on QF5 SIN-FRA who were over the moon that their points upgrade into business class came through.

Had a relative on LHR-SYD landing in sydney this morning whose business class points upgrade came through so he too was pleased.

It seems most people are getting their upgrades.

I heard from a QF insider that for anyone who is GOLD or higher - they are doing everything they can to process international upgrades (where as in good times they would have left empty seats in the upper cabins for people changing flights/missing planes/maintaing cabin ambience etc etc)

My QF5 tonight has 100 free seats atm, I've got a whole row at the front of the plane so not bothered about no upgrade!
