Question my fellow frequent flyers.

So I am QF Platinum at the moment with renewal at end of the year 31st December

My question is that I will depart for Hong Kong as a Platinum and return after my renewal date 10th January

Will I be entitled to extra baggage on the return leg as a Platinum, Gold Member or will I drop down back to Bronze?

Does Qantas have a 30 day grace period for which you retain your status if you haven't made sufficient Status Credits but have had the 4 segements?

Not looking to do as much flying this year =C

Not sure that is true samh004.

That's what I've seen mentioned here before, so just throwing it out there. I thought it was a soft drop regardless of how many flights you've taken.

Not sure if any members have had big drops so they could comment.

Apologies - my point was regaring a hard drop if sectors not achieved. If you don't take the qualifying flights you still only drop one tier.

I believe that's the case as long as you've made the minimum 4 qualifying flights.

In 2011 SWMBO earned BiS SG with an anniversary date of Oct 2012.

Last November she received a pack dated the 9th containing a QP card with expiry 31st Jan 2013, an QP Invitation with expiry "end November 2013" (sic) and a PS card with expiry Oct 2013.

Last week she received a letter offering her QP renewal for $320/$570/$1045 for 1/2/4 years or 50K QFF for one year.

The important thing is that her SC earn since June 2011 has been Zero.

This is what is known as a "Soft Landing" SG -> PS.

You may be comped an extra year as Platinum. I was. Don't bank on it, but.

Otherwise you'll go down one level to Gold. And then Silver the next year. And then Bronze the year after that.

Like me. ***SIGH***

Has there been much comping lately?

I wasn't comped when I dropped from WP -> SG in Jan 2012.
At the time I had more than enough forward bookings for WP and still was not comped.

At least once I got WP back again it was then valid for almost 2 full years

I was comped an extra year WP and then slowly slipped back tier by tier each year <sob>

A relative was comped Gold to Gold last month. I believe that Qantas has stopped posting out the "please explain" email where you can set out your future travel and if they like your response they will comp you.

I also had a relative comped Plat to Plat in June last year but he wasn't bothered as had a whole lot of flying which would have got him back to Plat by the end of June anyway. In fact he was annoyed that QF hadn't asked him - it is his view that you get one get out of jail card (ie comp card) during your life and it should be yours to elect when you use it!

Same here comped once then drop back to SG instead of Silver. Have re qualified as SG ever since but I was comped in advance but I still hit requalification before the renewal date.

I have a feeling if they keep records of such things my spend per SC would be high since a lot of my spending has been last minute domestic in high cost Y or it was until two years ago. I expect that is why I got the WP comp once and why I was going to get SG this year but still qualified.

With my knowledge gained here about JASAs I think I should be able to top up status to hit SG without relying on comped status again but it is good to know it exists for those who have travelled a lot over a long time.

One day hopefully I will reach Lifetime Gold and I won't have to worry about requalification for SG except warning about 'enhancements', 'improvements' or airline failure (like some here I list Golden Wings points / status back in 2001).

Soft landings however still need 4 QF segments but since 96% of my travelling is QFd that's not something that really applies in my case.

Not in SWMBO's experience.

SG->PS after NO flight taken = 0 SC's earned in the "year".

I'm not so sure of that, a colleague of mine got a soft landing from platinum to gold at the beginning of this month and he didn't have 4 QF or JQ flights. Ultimately it is not a stated policy so they could even treat things differently on a case by case basis.

Okay thanks for sharing that experience. I was going off what happened to a few USA based members when QF started following enforcing the 4 segments. It actually makes more sense to not worry about that for soft landings especially if the previous status was mostly earned on QF.

It probably didnt feel like a soft landing for some US based flyers to go from comfortably getting status to losing lounge access...
