Qantas to reopen the Hong Kong Lounge

Oh, the staff MADE that lounge tbh. Wing and Pier better (F obviously far more so) of course, but the staff at QF were just fantastic. Only had a few experiences myself to be fair, but every time the staff were great (and I'm not talking about efforts to please me as a P1, which I consider separate). Bar staff, for example, were great.

Not having been to HK since 2019, I actually assumed The Deck had taken over the QF space, but obviously not. Good news as this was always a great lounge.

They must really be getting an incredible discount on their lease renewal or they're very dissatisfied indeed with what CX is charging them.

I only went to QF HKG lounge once, in Jan 2020, when Covid just started. It was a very sad state, and the food offering was abysmal. Drinks was 2 choice of low quality beer from tap. The server privately complained about significant cost cutting by QF.

I tend to agree! I used to go to HKG a few times a year for work and visited once and never went back. So many better options.

Must’ve been too expensive not to reopen

Interesting to read such differing opinions on the QF HKG lounge. I always rated it really highly. Good food every time I visited and lovely staff. I liked the decor and ambiance too, more so than almost all the CX options in HKG for J / OWS. (I’ve never been to the updated Pier lounge which seems to rate highly)

QF HKG suffers by comparison with the CX offerings which most eligible customers (except QC members) can access - being CX's home port the J lounges are varied and better, and again the F lounges - Wing (hello Cabanas and Champagne bar) and Pier (dining and bar) are light years ahead.. and this is why I said the staff make the difference for me.

As a lounge - if it were in another port, say MNL, or even possibly a slightly larger version in AKL, it would be seen as pretty good by most I think for what it is(or was/will be again hopefully).. a good international grade J lounge. It has showers, bar, food options (which seemingly went down hill) an seating. Back when QF had flights to SYD/MEL/BNE around the same time, it could get a bit crowded, but no problem if on a lounge crawl (I usually picked QF last if flying QF as the gates were usually nearby).

Seems unlikely the good staff they had could be retained, but again for me they were the absolute best feature of the lounge. Seen in isolation, forgetting other options such as CX, it was a pretty good experience.

It is a real surprise that it is reopening and seems odd but suggest QF again wants HKG to be a reasonably served destination from Oz - which bodes well for QF/OW flyers assuming HKG and CX continue to be able to thrive despite the varying "challenges" ongoing surrounding that area. imo.

Time will tell how the new incarnation fares of course.

I think the "new" QF lounge lounge attempt was a move in right direction. We did not use it that much as HKG is a CX HUB and as a P1 with giffed WP status to my wife when travelling as a family unit would gravitate to the F lounges being no different when travelling through HND, NRT or KUL.

We must have been to different AKL lounges, the F lounge in AKL is no bigger than a shoe box and every time I have been there the bathrooms were broken.

I am also surprised that the lounge is re opening. I hope they bring back the cheesecake, best in the QF network.

Don't get me wrong as I am sure I have pushed many of the P1 rules in HKG to the limits. In 2018 I am pretty sure I went into the HKG QF lounge with a number of friends I did not know. From memory @JessicaTam just said or words along the lines we are with him and the fizz switched to champagne. In 2019 SST arranged someone from the QF HKG team to collect baggage and re check it, I just had to go to the lounge and collect the cards.

When I went to HKG I visited two CX F lounges and the QF lounge. When I was about to leave the second CX F lounge I visited, the Wing F, I saw there was a buffet and had a quick look. Normally I am underwhelmed by dessert offerings in lounges, but they had a hot dessert I loved on the buffet. By the time I got to the QF lounge I was too full to eat very much. The QF lounge was a big lounge and had a decent selection of food I recall when I was there. If I go back whilst WP, I'd definitely go to the CX F lounges first and then head over to the QF lounge closer to departure.

What I meant was that if what exists in the HKG lounge existed in AKL (just larger)... then it would make for a pretty reasonable international J lounge - certainly far better than the current, soon to be gone, config.

I've been in (old) AKL many times so I know how that is.

One assumes the new AKL setup will be much closer to the concept employed at SIN (J), HKG and LHR of a hybrid (SIN was originally covering all pax, F came later of course and was setup under the same general design concept as HKG and then LHR iirc) in which case yeah the space will be far better utilised, equipped and hopefully not a out of order sign on the showers for people to endlessly graffiti :D

That article also mentions an upgrade for the SYD Intl J lounge to be announced on the 15th at a Media event. Wonder if they'll release any design renders.
