I was in AKL very briefly over the weekend and since I've tried LAN and EK J (and F) across the ditch, I was keen to fly QF's option.

Starting with the QF lounge. It's only average with a bit of soup and salad. I'm assuming you get access to the EK J lounge (when you fly J on QF metal) so it's probably worth spending your time there. You can find footage of that in my EK F flight from AKL to SYD. There was no barista too! Just the coffee machine.

Boarding was pretty easy as there aren't that many passengers and only 6 in business class. After a warm towel and a glass of champagne, we were off. The view taking off was fantastic as it was the first time I've flown out of AKL when it hasn't been raining

The seat itself is quite wide although there's not much room! I didn't recline it because I could see that it was pushing back into the Y seat behind. It was a struggle to climb over the person next to me when I had to visit the gents room too.

The IFE folds out of the left arm rest and my unit, in particular, seemed to have had a tough life. Having said that, there was a decent amount of content.

The food was OK. The soup wasn't the best I've had although the chicken I had for the main course was fine. Ample wine was provided and that tasted fairly good.

The FAs were all quite friendly and I was referred to by name throughout the flight.

The flight was smooth and we arrived in SYD 10 mins ahead of schedule.

Over-all, the hard product is vastly inferior to LAN and EK's J (which I've flown in in the last few months). The FAs were all good and the smaller aircraft means that we get away and board/deplane faster, but really I'm clutching at straws. QF's trans-Tasman hard product does struggle and I'd be keen to see if they do anything about it or accept that they'll always struggle against the large number of discounted EK seats (I think there were 3 A380s at AKL which all cross the ditch) and just keep the current lot of 738s?

Here's the video I put together:

Thanks for the video and comments.

I have my first EK J on the MEL- AKL route and returning QF J Queenstown - SYD, looking to compare products as all my international J has been with CX

I actually flew over to AKL (from SYD) in EK J and will put up a report very shortly.
Enjoy Queenstown - it's an amazing place!

Thanks for the video. Ye gods, the squeeze into seat 3A brought back all sorts of horrible memories of domestic commuting.

About the only reason to fly QF J across the dutch is frequency. However, I would rather spend an extra day in SYD or AKL than spend 3 hours crammed into QF J.

Agreed - the frequency is certainly an advantage.
And just to add to the number of J seats, Air China (I think) are flying across the ditch although sadly don't offer an OW SCs.

Row 1 makes it better IMO. QF serve better Champagne and the service was excellent. The seat is wider than the EK one IIRC but I'm looking forward to trying that one out soon.

You certainly feel special in the QF 738 as there's a max of 12 J pax (in comparison with the hundreds (it feels) in the EK A380s) and (in my experience at least) I was referred to by name the whole flight. You also don't have to wait for the First pax to de-plane before you do. :) The seats were the widest I've had in ages. I'm not sure if it was due to the close proximity of the seat in front or some other factor, but the seats felt incredibly wide (more so than EK J and the skybed mk2s.)

Another good video PaulST. Notwithstanding giving us the finger at one point! I like the time lapse, especially as the aircraft climbed through layers over the NZ coast.

I am a fan of the QF Trans-Tasman service. mainly for crew and as you say quicker boarding etc. Is helped by the fact I have F lounge access in Syd/Mel and EK lounge in Akl (if open). But hard product is showing it's age on most aircraft I've been on lately. For this length of flight I reckon it's fine.

I assume you mean 12 passengers in J, not 6? Even so, service is very personal with both CSM and dedicated J cabin attendant looking after you for significant parts of the flight.

You cannot understand how annoyed I was with myself for missing my finger for such an extended period of time. :-D haha
The view leaving NZ was fantastic! I just hope I get equally as impressive weather next time I fly into Queenstown!
Sorry yes I meant 12 pax in J.
We barely saw the CSM and were mostly served by a lovely young lady.

The other reason is AA points redemption in J - 17.5k is pretty good value, especially if you depart from PER or DRW and can!t be used for EK redemptions.

BTW those EK J seats get pretty hard on long haul and they are narrow (18."5 IIRC) but for 3.5 or 4 hours across the dutch they are still better than QF if you are paying real $$. :p

Yes the meal service just seems to have the J attendant, which means pax in row 3 can be waiting quite a while for service.

On the plus side the CSM is in the main cabin and I've been well looked after in Row 4 or 5 when I've travelled in Y.
