Hi,
I have been using reading this forum for the past couple of weeks and have found it very informative, my boyfriend recommended the site.
I need to make a choice between joining the qantas program or the AA program.
I am actually American and my boyfriend is Australian.
I am visiting the land of down under in a couple of weeks and wanted to know what your suggestion.
Here is my flight schedule all in S class and booked with Qantas
In November
lax-mel
mel-adl
In February
adl-cbr
cbr-syd
syd-lax

Plus some internal flights

So what would be the recommendation of airline program to join?

Thanks for any help

Depending on what your future plans are, you may be better crediting to QF

Crediting S class to AA will earn approximately 9205 miles whilst crediting to Qantas you will approximately 18410 miles excluding any other flights you may take

18000 miles will allow you to redeem for a short r/t flight in the US ( or a longer one way trip up to 2400 miles 1 way ) .

Given that for US domestic awards, QF is unable to impose fuel fines, there is no cost difference in taxes so in you case you would be better I would say with QF points

It is a shame that you didn't come across AFF before booking the trip, since might have been able to advise to book through AA on the AA flight numbers to Australia and in which case AA would have been the plan to use , together with a AA Platinum challenge

Thanks for all the information Dave I appreciate your help, you have answered a question which would have taken me quite a while to work out.

I think my boyfriend booked on Qantas as he is a Gold FF and wanted to request an upgrade for both of us, plus we got a great deal on the Aussie Air Pass Special.

Thanks! no doubt I will continue checking the site for new information on this great forum....

Correct me if I am wrong
Has QANTAS ditched Lifetime Memberships from October 2007 and is now only offering a maximum of 4 years membership?

I think that is only in relation to Qantas Club lifetime memberships... for now...

If you want to go after a lifetime status, then on AA, you need 1 Million Miles, or 2 Million Miles. On QANTAS it is 7000 Status Credits or 14000 Status Credits.

On AA, all earned miles count, even status bonuses and miles from credit card / dining spending.
