However, I tried a booking today for SYD-FRA in that period and it came up with ~$3000 return for discount economy. Bleurch.

Yep, logged in found a good fare Business Class Paris to Melbourne 2800 EUR (one way). Paris/Melb return 1225 EUR ~ $1650 Aust.
