Hi All. I have done a bit of googling, but can't find an answer to this anywhere, so thought the brains on here might know....

I am flying LHR -> AKL next week on Qatar in business class. As such, their website tells me I am allowed a baggage allowance of 40kg with a 'Maximum Dimension' of 300cm. Further down they define maximum dimension as width + height + depth, which is different from specifying maximum volume (i.e. w x d x t).

I need to bring back with me some boxes in addition to my small suitcase. Total weight won't be more than 20kg, but the boxes aren't that small.

My question is whether anybody knows how Qatar calculates the 'Maximum Dimension' requirement when you have more than one bag/box. Is it w+d+h of bag 1 + w+d+h of bag 2 + w+d+h of bag 3 etc OR is it w+d+h of all bags when placed next to each other in the most effective use of overall volume?

I have a small suitcase and 3 boxes to bring back with me. If I do w+d+h for each box/bag separately and add together I get over 400cm, but if I stack them all in a big pile and imagine a 'virtual box' around the whole pile the w+d+h for this single 'virtual box' is only 222cm.

Hopefully I have explained this well, it is a little bit counter intuitive as they use total sum of edge lengths rather than volumes, which can only be added together one way.

Any advice would be appreciated.

PS: I have tried calling Qatar but when I asked the operator "Is your maximum dimension calculated as dimension of each bag added together or just dimension of all bags when stacked together" every time I asked he just repeated "Our maximum dimension is width + height + length must be < 300cm" and refused to be drawn as to an answer to my actual question instead just repeating what is on their website.
