What were the details of the award flight?

Other with QF awards on Qatar have had problems

Flight was initially from canberra to Doha
Got rescheduled to Melbourne to Doha
and now it has been cancelled altogether

Others have had problems when QF have failed to reticket partner awards in time after a change
Sadly a common error by Qantas.

Look here for QF examples of QF not reticketing so flight lost

I understand there is a difference in obligations between the airline cancelling a flight and 'losing' an award flight due to QF reticketing incompetence

Not that it helps if the flights were cancelled due to Qantas' failing to reticket, but here's Qatar Airways Schedule change policy which Qantas Customer Services (as Agent) would follow:

Schedule Change | Qatar Airways

The important thing is under "Rebooking":
Rebooking Options for QR and/or Other Airline Schedule Change

One of the following options may be selected by the customer, provided the “Ticket Reissue Guidelines” are complied with:

1. Accept option offered by automated reaccommodation tool (i.e. UN1/TK1)

2. Rebook onto a QR operating flight(s) from/to the same origin, destination in the same or lowest available QR booking class within the same cabin

3. Rebook onto a QR operating flight(s) within the same country as original and/or within 500 international miles (TPM) from original embarkation and/or disembarkation point in the same or lowest available QR booking class within the same cabin
