Surfing in QF First Lounge right now and one very important site (my business!!) is blocked by the Optus internet filter.
What makes it worse is I'm checking statistics to see how many new customers we moved to Optus this month :!::!:

The filter says it's coughography, although I'm viewing an admin .php script with no images or header/meta information.

Anyone else finding normal sites being blocked under the new nanny filter system?

I hope you're not in the business of stiffing people. It could explain why it's blocked ;)

Can you reach anything hosted at your domain at all? Or does it seem resource/page specific?

optus blocking their own source of new customers?:cool:

reductionist: it's only a handful of pages that won't work. The main domain is fine. Wonder what the trigger is?

Although they seem to be blocking some sites entirely, other blockings seem to be on individual pages (for example some youtube videos are blocked, but most aren't). The blocking also happens for some newly created content so would not be possible to have been likely to be manually blocked. They appear to be using some sort of content analysis on the web pages. It seems to be more complex than simple keyword filtering. Perhaps something like a Bayes classifier.

In general it seems to be set relatively strictly. At a level I would expect for employees of a company.

I once used a QP computer to look up the Coat of Arms of a European municipality. The site was blocked because it was considered to be weaponry.

When the Optus Internet was first switched on a few weeks ago, I happened to sit myself next to one of the QC Sydney lounge managers and strike up a conversation. They said they assumed there'd be teething problems, particularly with site blocking and VPN, because none of the lists were transferrable from the old Telstra networks. He said if there were any problems now to ask him, but if there were in the future, to just e-mail Qantas and ask it to be passed on... So I'd recommend shooting them an e-mail. They're expecting it, it seems.
