QC joining question

I'm keen on taking up that 40,000 point offer for joining the QC..

My question is, can you gain access to the QC straight away or do you have to wait for that membership pack to be sent out?

I am Bronze FF and have no card either

As soon as they have processed your purchase. Typically the next business day. It will then show on your boarding pass. Then you are in!

I think its a wise purchase as I'm moving to Mt isa in a few weeks and will have no other option but to travel qantas to get out of there!!!! (even though there isnt a QC in mt isa ) So might start building some status

Qantas Club doesn't help with status at all, but does make it a little more bearable until you get to gold. You could use the 40k points to help towards a JASA which may get you done status though.

IIRC it is immediate. Earlier this year just after I joined QP on the phone, I logged in to my FF account and the status had changed over there and then. I flew QF that day and when I printed my BP at the airport after OLCI, the new FF status was updated and I was in. The membership year is also calculated by calendar month, so you get membership for the remainder of the month you join + the length that you signed up for.
