Help Frequent Flyers!

Here's my situation. My QC Silver status is expiring 30th Nov 2009 and requires 85 status credits for retention. My QC membership was bought through my former employer at a corporate rate. As I no longer work for this employer, I will need to pay for a QC membership at the individual rate (and pay the sign-up fee) - which I don't want to do. However, I may be starting with a new employer in Feb 2010.

I am wondering whether anyone out there in the AFF community has any bright ideas for me to retain my Silver status and thus remain a QC member. Please note that I am based in Beijing until Jan 2010.

Also, I do have a flight from HKG - PER (O class) in early Jan 2010.

My initial thoughts were either to:
  • Do a status run - if so, what are my cheapest options out of Beijing or Hong Kong?
  • Contact Qantas for an extension or a top-up of some sort - is this possible?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

QF Silver does not give you QC access, so doing a status run to retain Silver wont give you lounge access. It will give you OW Ruby status, which gives priority check-in, baggage allowances and boarding.

If having QC access is really important to you then I'd suggest taking up this offer. It'll save you about $20. I think.

Edit: The renewal rate for an Australian resident is $405, but $325 on AFF's corporate scheme, so that's actually a $30 saving.

To be honest the only real benefit you get by being Silver over a basic QC member is biz check in and a few extra points (25%).

You don't get free qantas club at Silver level, so your QC paid membership will need to be renewed if you plan on using it's benefits.

85 SC is a fair way off for Silver (means you're at 215 at the moment).

For the $1000 it will cost you to keep silver, I would pay the ~$300 in Qantas Club membership and be done with it.

Aim for Gold next year, which gives you free QC :)

Ah thanks very much! Quite a bit of an oversight on my part in regards to complimentary QC access. I think I will simply take up the AFF QC offer. Thanks again!

If you have a paid membership currently for Qantas Club, as long as you do not let the membership lapse, you should not have to pay the joining fee again; you should only need to pay the renewal fee

If renewing as an individual member, it should cost $405
If you renew through AFF, it should cost $325 ( plus the $50 AFF Gold membership fee )

Just renew by end of the month and you will avoid the joining fee

I wouldn't spend any money trying to renew Silver status since if flying on Qantas, it will give you no real benefits over Qantas Club membership.

Also note that quite often the form will get sent out directly to you, so you may be able to renew on your current rate anyway.

The form asks for the Corporate Scheme ID. No ID, no Renewal at corporate rates. I had the same problem with my ex employer. A few years ago I rang QFF and asked for the ID and I found someone who told me, but was obviously not meant to. Last time I went to renew, they told me I "have to contact your scheme co-ordinator". In this case, You'd need to see admin here and he'll do it all for you. Come renewal time, he'd have to process it for you too:)

I got a letter mailed to me when my membership was due to expire ~4 years ago simply urging me to renew and asking for $nnn (which was the corporate rate)...the company number (no mention of the name) was printed on the letter, but with no prominence. And that's all the letter said. It was one of the 'quicker' invoices I have paid. :)

More recently, when up for renewal again I got an e-mail with a link to renew. At the link it was very pointedly stated that by renewing here I was acknowledging that I still worked for Company X and was still eligible for their scheme and that Qantas may well check this.

I did not renew (not through that scheme anyway).
