Good evening all,

We are booked in Y+ from FRA to SYD on QF6/32 and bought the tickets months ago, departing FRA on 28/7. For the last few months our allocated seat has been 24A and B which by all accounts from reviewing this site and the seat maps available online, including expert flyer were business class skybeds. As a result we have not pursued the option of a possible points upgrade between FRA and SIN.

Logging into QFF today I noticed our seat allocation has been changed to row 35 J/K. From my quick research online it appears that QF have changed the aircraft from an old 4 classs config to a 3 class config.

Can somebody please confirm this and that it is a permanent move as part of their changes to the 747 aircraft or an arrangement only for that date?

Is it worth the points to request an upgrade to J? If so, do you think it's too late to put in the request or otherwise futile?

Thanks heaps for your assistance in advance - much appreciated!

Cheers!

If the seat map for row 35 that you see is 2x4x2 seats then your aircraft has been changed and your are in PE seats.

Put you upgrade request in when you like as long as it's before a day or two of the flight. (I believe "Time of Request" is no longer used as a tiebreaker in priority.)

EF does show Fra/Syd flight 28/7 is 3 class 747 and you are in the next to last PE row (2 x 4 x 2 seating). Plenty of J seats available in the lower cabin and in the pointy end (ex 1st class cabin). Good luck as you may be able to grab one of those.

Thanks a lot gor both of your help. It certainly has been changed to a Y+ seat. Thanks for the advice on loads and upgrades. Much appreciated.

Just as a follow on - I thought the reconfiguration of the 747's was to start later this year. Is the changed plane part of a set they've recofigured early or has Qantas had this configuration for a long time. Also - in your experience, is it possible the plane could be changed again or more likely to stay as it now is?

Thanks again - time to pool the points for that upgrade by the sounds of it...the J seat with the Y+ service would've been great!! :)

Cheers

No first class cabin on QF5/6 for a long time. It's always been Skybed Mark I in Zone A

That said, always worth putting in for J class on such a long haul flight (IMHO). Even if you're on a flight with PE-in-a-J seat, you can always put in for an upgrade (just in case) and cancel a day or two in advance.

Over that distance there is a big difference between Y+ and J due to the seats sleeping ability. I would go for 2 x J seat in the pointy end of QF 6 in a heart beat. Let us know how you guys find the flight and ENJOY!

There are two reconfigurations going on - one is basically complete and that is for the 2 class 744 having PE added to make them 3 class.

The other one to start in a few months if for Four Class 744 to be reconfigured to 3 class (J/W/Y) with Skybed Mk II in the nose.

Hi all

Back yesterday, so a quick update.

We put in for a points upgrade just after receiving all your great advice. Upon checking in at FRA we found out our request had beeen granted! We sat upstairs in 11 J/K...well not much sitting, more like sleeeping laying down. Only problem is now we have experienced that it's very hard to go back....

As an aside, this was after we received an op=up at the gate at HKG for our HKG to LHR trip - we were on an award flight in Y and were bumped up to Y
+!! The flight from SYD to HKG was near empty so we had a row of 4 each to stretch out in. So a good trip all round. Even the last leg from SIN to SYD in row 36 premium economy was goodd...with almost 5 hours sleep!

Thanks to Qantas and a big thanks to the attendants on the 1st 2 legs, Marrie, Shane and Angie!

Cheers
Jeff and Stace
