Reports coming in that QF64 operating from Johannesburg to Sydney had to turn off an engine shortly after take off. It dumped fuel for an hour then landed.

Also it appears that this is the same aircraft that returned to Sydney just a few days ago when operating QF17.

Are these many incidents one after another normal? Surely these aircraft have not yet come to the end of their usefullness.

Can it be put down to poor maintenance or lack of maintenance?

Are the 747 fleet not maintained at Avalon?

I guess we could be seeing another 5th pod flight soon.

I don't think anyone can blame a bird strike on QF maintenance, QF management policy, QF aircraft age or anything else QF-related. They happen quite regularly around the world and birds don't tend to discriminate between airlines.

QF64 returned to Johannesburg after a bird strike and engineers are attending to it.

The aircraft was VH-OEI, a 747-400ER, however as you can understand, there is no connection between this bird strike and the return of QF17 to Sydney on Monday - this incident was beyond our control.

Thanks Red Roo - is the aircraft able to be repaired in JNB as-is or will a new engine be flown out (pod)?

We're handling this in Johannesburg - this involves the replacement of some engine parts.

Bad luck strikes again for QF!

Actually I am seeing a positive from all of this. There have been multiple incidents over the past few weeks (whether they are newsworthy is a debatable issue) but in all of it there have been no lives lost and I am not aware of any injuries. QF is looking like an unlucky airline with a skilled set of pilots.

Agree with simongr. Also if you look at it another way, the continued incidents all benefited from home maintenance, not overseas. So the union has a lot to be quiet about.

I wasn't blaming overseas maintenance.

Anyway that post was before the real reason of the incident was revealed....
I am aware of that, but it will always pop up when these things happen.
