Hi guys,

The Mrs and I are flying on QF009 in December, MEL-SIN. From the seat selection it seems to be this aircraft:
SeatGuru Seat Map Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 4-Class Vers. 1 (744)

We're flying Y+, and at the moment I've put us in 35 A/B.

Generally though, I prefer to be in a bulkhead row, so nobody is reclining in front of me.

Seatguru suggests that 34 A/B have limited legroom. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this? That's probably where we'd sit if there's enough legroom to recline and have enough legroom - neither of us are tall (I'm 5'10", she's shorter :))

Cheers,
Mat.

EDIT: Whoops, sorry, I guess I posted this in the wrong forum. Can't seem to find where to delete it.
Much appreciated if an admin could move it for me.

If you are 5'10" then row 34 in PE on Qantas would be fine!

BTW, this Qantas forum is fine ...

You wont have an issue with row 34 at less than 6". Beyond that, and you may want elsewhere.

Cheers, thanks guys.

Any other thoughts on the best PE seats on that config?

Cheers,
Mat.

Any bulkhead aisle....... > Bulkhead window > any other about equal (further forward better as further away from Y toilet)

Hmmm, 34 A/B looks like they're right next to the PE toilets.
Perhaps 34 J/K might be better?

It's actually the J toilet (Y+ shares with Y on the 744) so it's not busy at all (we were in 35AB and i couldnt/didnt hear it flush once on either of LHR-BKK or BKK-SYD).

34JK is on the galley side - didnt go over there but would summise there'd be a bit of noise from the crew getting organised.

35AB was very quiet, and i noted those in 34AB seemed to be having no trouble sleeping either.

I'd very happily go 34AB or 35AB if selecting again.

Ahhh, good point.
Hmmm, decisions, decisions.

Would you take 34 A/B or 35 A/B given the choice?

Cheers!
Mat.

Having said the above.......

At 6'5" it'd be a tough choice, but i'd probably still go 34A/B just to save the climbing in and out issues as it's heaps easier. But i'd settle for 35 as a narrow second (34 was blocked when i tried to select as i'm only PS).

If you're 5'10", no contest. 34 it is.

Edit: 34DE are fine too (middle bulkhead) if you want bulkhead.

Many thanks doc,

One final question (promise!). I'm leaning towards 34 A/B, but the Mrs is a little nervous about the J toilets being so close. What impact is there really? I guess a bulkhead in front of 34 A/B and a curtain entry to the J cabin, so apart from potential flushing noise (and hopefully not odour!), no other impact?

Many thanks again,
Mat.

Serously, it's a nice pleasant evening flight so you won't be trying to sleep.

So noise should not be that much of an issue.

If SWMBO is concerned about the J class Lav, then go J/K.

Another good thing is that you won't get the sunset shining through the window on that side of the aircraft.

Hi Mat,

There is a curtain, and I seriously NEVER heard the toilet from 35 so I cant imagine it's overly loud in 34.

As serfty says (he's so wise:)), as an evening flight, you'll want to stay awake to avoid jetlag so it wont be a problem. Bear in mind theres not that many J seats ahead (many more upstairs which have their own toilets) and F use their own toilet.

Far better to have the occaisonal (and I mean, occasional) flush noise, than feel crammed in and struggle to get out because the dunce in the seat in front has reclined into your lap.

Y+ was a great experience for us (and bear in mind we'd be upgraded to J on the way to UK so we were worried it was going to be a let-down).

Thanks again guys, your feedback and suggestions are most appreciated.

SWMBO (as serfty so accurately described her) has vetoed 34 A/B on account of the Lav (despite my assurances), so I've moved us from 35 A/B to 34 J/K.

Happy wife, happy life :D

All good.

Cheers!
Mat.

Make sure you report back what 34JK was like (again wasnt selectable on our flight for us as PS).

Can anyone give me some advice as to weather the aisle is preferable over a window seat in this aircraft configuration?

I have to choose between 34J & 34K (I'm travelling solo).

I think I would like a window seat but my main concerned that I will be trapped by a reclined/sleeping passenger in the aisle seat.

When travelling solo I always try to get bulkhead or emergency exit as I hate to climb over people. I also don't like other people climbing over me (mad a comment on another thread about other pax falling on top of me when trying to climb over).

So you'd prefer bulkhead aisle over bulkhead window?

I have access to both, I can't choose between them.

I would go bulkhead window personally. Easy to get over the legs of the person next to you and nobody climbing over you.
