To celebrate their inaugural 787 LAX-MEL service starting today, QF has some great fares on sale until Monday. Grabbed myself a Y seat for March 2018. Don't ever recall a lower QF fare for AU to (continental) USA.

Agreed a great fare. Can't remember one this low either.

Dates and details

Mon-Thu Departures only .,.. (Personally, I'd try to route via SYD and the A380 if possible at or near the fare level - I'm still not convinced about whY on a QF 787 ...)

Im not convinced of Y long haul at anytime and I guess at those prices not upgradable.

$787 seems to be on the direct service only (##) but yea agreed via SYD would be optimal on the 388.
I wonder how the loads on the 787 will be in Y as the last couple of times over I've been lucky with not so full flights and a row of 4 to myself.

A good price definitely. But not the lowest by a long margin.

Even without checking I remember an economy fair for around $570 in July 2015 on Qantas.

Virgin seems to be matching these fares on their own MEL-LAX flights. I'm seeing VA fares for travel in the second half of next year for as low as $726 return on various OTAs (e.g. iflynet). The Virgin website has the same flights for $785.

That was a mist*ke fare so no comparison.

I think 2018 will see sustained discounting in Y on this route even for QF. Competition has increased on this route and while a huge success for QF Japan as crept up to be a winner in the dollar department for the airline.

Discounting transpacific, little to no discounting to Japan. (or Singapore, as Mel, Bris, Syd all feed there for onward to the UK. QF hoping to send some of those passengers via Perth)

Is it possible to by 3 seats for 2 pax for more room in Y?.

Yes, you could buy a "comfort seat" by calling Qantas. You'd need to pay for the third seat, minus the taxes. At this price though, it may well be worth it. You can earn points & status credits for the comfort seat.

If you're referring to the VA fare, is there anything to indicate it is a mistake fare?

No tears on OzBargain yet. And the lowest VA price (via OTAs) is only $8 less than the lowest Qantas price (via OTAs).

QANTAS: Los Angeles Return from Melbourne $734, Brisbane $930, Sydney $933, Adel $1006, Perth $1049, Gold Coast $1069 @IWTF - OzBargain

so no comparison.

Indeed no comparison, just info about cheap international airfares.

My reply was to the below quote...

Which is referring to the QF mist*ke fare in July 2015.

Mel-lax oct/nov rt from $444 us qantas

Comparing mist*ke fares to above board published fares is like comparing apples to oranges.

Indeed. But why stop at one comfort seat. Is it possible to buy 2 comfort seats and use the 3 seats to lie flat for the journey! Still cheaper than 1 W seat... and I guess 3x points and SC. Probably the only way I'd choose to fly in a 9-across 787.

I wonder if QF would allow this? (I don't see any reason they wouldn't, but haven't heard of this being done before.)
