QF/AA codeshare name correction

I have booked four flights through Qantas. Two are codeshare flights with AA - Qantas Flights operated by American Airlines.

My son's first name has been spelt incorrectly. It is listed as Ememtt. It should be Emmett.

Qantas agent 1: said she would correct the name, and a new itinerary will be sent. Received new itinerary, name not corrected (the new itinerary had updated flights in it - she made it very clear that the name correction would happen).
Qantas agent 2: said she would correct the name, and told me to wait 30 hours for new itinerary. I never received this.
Qantas agent 3: told me she can't correct the name. Told me to book new flights, pay $200 cancellation fee per person, and wait for refund. I don't have a spare $11,500 to cover new flights. I requested a manager.
Qantas manager: said the same thing as agent 3. Then told me to call AA, and have them correct the name for their two domestic flights, and then call Qantas back and have a new itinerary sent through.
American Airlines agent 1: told me to call Oneworld because AA can't correct the name, as Qantas booked the flights. I googled, and Oneworld doesn't have a contact number.
American Airlines agent 2: told me to call Qantas and have them call Oneworld because AA can't correct the name as Qantas issued the tickets.

Can I please have some advice here?
Qantas are adamant that they cannot correct the name. According to Qantas, I have to find an extra $11,500 plus be $600 out of pocket for cancellation fees.

We are flying in July

Qantas: Brisbane to LAX
QF operated by AA: LAX to Orlando
QF operated by AA: Orlando to LAX
Qantas: LAX to Brisbane

Many thanks

Brooke

So they are correct, because there is an interline, the booking has to be cancelled and a new one created. But this is their problem, not yours.

How long did you take to notice the spelling error? Was it within 24 hours?

The only issue I can see is if it was ticketed and more than 24 hours had passed before you requested the change, then technically speaking you are responsible for the error - but that would only be the fare difference + $60 from what I can tell (and only for the one pax - the other pax are not effected).

You need to call QF again and quote the following policy - and make sure you tell them you already requested the change:

If you caught the error within 24 hours changing the name shouldn't be a problem. Either they correct it for you or you can cancel the flight for free per the Department of Transportation Rules on cancellation. Keep in mind that unlike flying domestically in Australia where you can fly as Mickey Mouse or Alan Joyce and no one would bat an eye, when travelling to the US, everything must be accurate. They are sticklers for even minor details. For instance, I was hassled at a TSA check point at LAX when showing my driver's license instead of my NEXUS card. They check your travel documents at security at the gate, and sometimes even at immigration too!

Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately I didn’t catch the error within 24 hours of booking.
I will give Qantas a call again tomorrow and quote that policy, thank you.

I was hanging on the edge of my seat hoping to read this actually worked!

I've been trying for my first ever OWA and it has been an ongoing nightmare, with most advice being 'give up' 😅
