QF/BA Hong Kong Lounge

Hello,

I will be travelling first class BA HKG-LHR next month. Can anyone offer information/experience with the QF/BA "The Hong Kong Lounge" and any check-in advice? Is it possible to use The Wing or The Pier? I'd ideally like to check in my luggage six hours prior to departure but am not sure if this is possible.

I liked the lounge myself - except that the floors squeeked with my shoes - The only problem is that you are not supposed to leave the airport once checked in - so a 6 hour check in (unless you want to have a sleep before hand in the transit hotel (if they have one - not sure)) then they may not do it.

Ring QF or BA and ask.

The QF/BA lounge at HKG is a pretty standard Qants Club international lounge. The showers are quiet good. Food is weak and the bar is self serve with standard QF stock.

You can use the CX lounges if you hold OneWorld Sapphire or Emerald status and are travelling on a OneWorld operated and marketed flight.

Airport checkin is not good for most airlines other than CX, for QF I have had to wait untill 2.5 hours before the flight to get rid of my bags. InTown checkin at the airport express is open much earlier.

As for the lounge, it is pretty average, F is not really separated and does not have its own showers so the door between both tends to get used a lot.

In addition to what NM posted about accessing the Wing and the Pier if you have oneworld Sapphire or Emerald, it has been stated in the BA forum in FlyerTalk that some people travelling BA First Class have been able to access them without status.

It's not a published benefit, but it seems to have worked in the past and so worth a try if you really want to try these lounges.

Can't really see the point myself - you'll be very well fed and watered on board in First, so the QF/BA lounge is fine. Lounge standards are much more important for those of us who do most of our travel in the back of the bus, where pre-flight snacks and drinks are vitually a necessity.

But like I said, if you want to check them out, it should be possible.

Having re-read your initial post, if you manage to check-in six hours before the flight it would be worth trying out the Wing and/or Pier. Six hours is a long time to be in one lounge, so you might as well visit as many as possible. You will probably also appreciate the long walks between the various lounges prior to the long flight.

The reason I want to check in six hours before the flight is due to bit of a strange situation. I will be travelling QF economy (a FF redemption) from Australia to HK, and the BA flight is on another ticket. I will go out to Kowloon during the six hour stopover but prefer not to be saddled with luggage.

When I get to Heathrow I just want to be able to grab my bags, run and meet a friend for breakfast! I am worried that the QF checkin in Australia won't attach the correct tags to the bag and I'll be stuck with a long wait. The in-town service at HK sounds great, but I have the same worry - do they know to attach the correct tags for each airline and class?

You should be able to check bags through from Australia. Will need to show your HKG-LHR ticket at check-in in Australia though, and your checked bag receipt at HKG check-in (assuming you dont get BP issued in Australia also).

You should be able to go to your TA (or QF Res) and get the two bookings linked in their system (i.e. quote both bookings numbers and ask them to be linked)...alternatively ask for an "information only" sector (of the BA HKG/LHR flight) to be put on your original FF booking. This will allow the CSA at check-in to "see" the next sector and check the luggage through to LHR (but they may still require you to show the BA ticket for proof at check-in).

Thanks, I've combined bookings before and never had a problem in that regard. However will the QF check-in in Australia (or in-town check-in at HK) put the appropriate first/priority tags on the luggage to speed collection at Heathrow?

It's a loooong time since I've travelled in First, but on one trip (CBR-SYD on QF, SYD-LHR on BA) the CBR check-in put on a "Priority" tag only. When the bag arrived in LHR it had a BA "First" tag on it.

Can't guarantee that this works everywhere and everytime, but there does (or at least did) seem to be some sort of system to take care of it.

Don't know about that. They did it for me yesterday. Checked my bag at KL Sentral (the train station for the KLIA Express in Kuala Lumpur) for a business class flight KUL-HKG. It was tagged there with a business class priority label. When I collected it at LAX it had a CX First Class tag on it.
