Late notice, but Ch7 Perth will be screening a segment tonight which goes behind the scenes with QF at PER.

Don't have the capabilities to record and upload, but if nobody else can grab it will cover the highlights later.

Well, here's the highlights of the piece:

  • Numbers game
    • PER processes 57k a week, 8k a day
    • 2k pax and .8k bags will have been checked in for the four hours up to 8am each morning
    • Average flight to MEL will be carrying 4.6t of freight and 215 bags, taking approx. 40min to load.
  • Baggage
    • dozen cameras and sensors monitoring baggage system
    • airside belts are rfid zoned so it knows exactly where each bag is, and paper tags are scanned as they are loaded onto each trolley.
    • takes an average of four minutes for a bag to go from injector to bag trolley. (and yet they can never get timings even close to this vicinity of plane to belt?? go figure)
  • Fully staffed ops room, handling coordination of 15 departures in the morning using only 7 bays.
  • Staffing
    • Crew start signing on from 4am.
    • 1600 QF staff based in PER, including ground, crew & flight deck (seems a bit high, can't record so couldn't check that's what I heard).
    • Missed a later breakdown of those numbers.

Well, here's the highlights of the piece:
[*]Numbers game

Man, what is the point of all those numbers that so many TV shows obsess over? It's like somebody hands them a fact sheet with lots of numbers and off they go, reciting them like parrots. Who cares about how many pax or bags or movements they handle? Does anybody remember that afterwards? What is the 'context' for all those data points, do they actually give it any meaning or is it just a lot of big numbers to allegedly 'wow' the audience? Doesn't do anything for me!

Man, what is the point of all those numbers that so many TV shows obsess over?
Two points:

  1. If they didn't have numbers, what else would they report on?
  2. Numbers provide important context, specially to pax who live in the 'customer of one' world - helping them to realise that there's large volumes and cogs in the chain to make their once-a-year flight to Shebangabang in O (Y-) leave on time, bags aboard.

Qantas needs these kinds of puff pieces to help with their image. Good to see they're pushing them through the media.

(Same with Today show this morning etc etc etc)

Did anyone manage to record and upload this?

It does not seem to be featured on the Today Tonight Website anywhere:evil:
