That requirement is usually in small print on every ticket, however I have never been asked to show mine on any airline...

I have, on SriLankan. Didn't have the card on me so was nearly denied boaerding. Had to ferret through my laptop to show them my bank account with the credit card. Could easily have ended in disaster.

Common in some countries, specially with one way or unusual fares.

It's an anti fraud thing basically as I understand it.

Same, several times. Had cancelled one card and forgotten another, can’t remember how it was solved.
I think the option was there to pay the same amount on a new CC and get the old one refunded.

I had this with my daughter some years ago. I was able to go to the CX office in SYD T1 and show them the card and they made a note on their system to the effect it was all kosher. Perhaps give them a call in SYD.

You can bypass the requirement - if it exists - by buying the ticket through an online travel agency… expedia for example. This is because the travel agent takes responsibility for verifying the card and so the passenger won’t be asked to do so at the airport.

Doesn’t it also flag the traveller as a potential drug mule?

ie: when their one way ticket is paid for by a third party in a different country.
Possibly, but that’s of no interest to the airline! Customs would be more interested in that, and showing the credit card at the airport won’t deter a customs inspection if they have flagged you :(

Same here a few years ago on SriLankan, when I booked and paid for flights for the kids. It did mention it on the website that they needed to confirm the credit card holder. I called the support number and asked what they needed as I didn't want to travel out to the airport at midnight to confirm details. They were able to do that over the phone, so it was all good.
